"Jayden is my girl!" Daniel yells
"No Jayden is my girl!" Yells Christian.
Christian and Daniel. Two best friends fighting over a girl. What else is new?
I just sit there listening. Not really sure what's going on. We've been best friends since the first grade and now suddenly it's a game of who's I am.
"First of all I'm not anyone's girl." I reply.
"Second of all. I love you both the same. But not in that way. We're just best friends." I explain.
Obviously not listening to me both Daniel and Christian go back and forth and back and forth arguing.
I eventually just leave.
I'm done with them. The arguing the selfishness.
I walk home in my vans and black skater dress.
As in walking Daniel's car pulls up behind me and beeps.
"Baby please get in. I'm sorry. We didn't want to fight over you. You're just so beautiful and we both want you to be our girlfriend. You're sweet, talented, and nice, and we're two idiots. I'm really truly sorry. Can I give you a ride home?" He says.
"Sure." I reply as I open the door and hop in.
As we're driving I think about if I were to date either of them how my life would be.
If I dated Daniel:
My life would be perfect. He's sweet, understanding, kind, and ambitious. He knows where he wants to be and knows he wants me in his future. But relationships are all about struggles and challenges that we have to face. And with Daniel I would have everything, and it would just seem so.... Different than a real relationship.
But if I were to date Christian.
Oh if I were to date Christian that would be a huge challenge. And I love challenges. Christian is funny, rough around the edges, and indecisive. He would probably date me for a month, screw up and then leave me heartbroken. But every day would be a new adventure with him.
I'm so confused.
"What are you thinking beautiful?" Daniel asks.
"I was just thinking about if I were to date one of you how my life would be." I reply truthfully.
"Jayden listen. I know Christian is my best friend. We all are. I know Christian and you had a weird flirting thing before this. But with me, I can love you. I do love you. I know times might not always be as fun as with Christian but when I see myself graduating high school in a month I see you and me going to college together and getting married. I see us having kids and having a perfect family. You're the most beautiful, amazing, smart, talented, funny girl I have ever met and I want you to be in my future forever. So before you say yes to one of us or no to both of us. Just remember I can't always offer the most fun, but I can offer the most love." He says swiftly as if he'd practiced.
I'm overcome with feelings. I think I might like Daniel. I think I might have always liked Daniel.
I pull him close and kiss him hard and long. If I was unsure at first that kiss clarified everything. Daniel and I were meant to be.
