You wake up to your alarm. You get up and follow your normal routine. But today isn't a normal day, its your sixteenth birthday. You quickly finish getting ready and run downstairs. You call for your parents but no one is home. You go to the kitchen and see a note on the counter:
"Olivia, your dad's car broke down so I have to go meet him. See you later love you"
"What a great start to the my birthday" you say a loud , "all alone"
You finish breakfast and o back upstairs to get ready. It takes you 20 minutes to pick out your best outfit. You take your time doing your makeup and hair. Once you are done, you look in the mirror. Your phone goes off and see a text from your boyfriend, Daniel.
"Hey Olivia, I'm sorry but I can't pick you up today. My sister needed the car. Love you"
You check your clock to see that you have 15 minutes to catch the bus. You finish packing your lunch pack your backpack and run out the door. You reach the bus stop just as the bus is pulling in. The door opens and you get in. You find sone your friends and sit next to them. Non of them wish you a happy birthday either. "Did they all forget?" You think to yourself.
The bus pulls up in front of the school and everyone files out normally. You get inside and everyone compliments your outfit and hair, but no happy birthday. You look for Daniel but don't see him. The bell rings and you are off to your first class.
Once your morning classes are done you go to your locker to grab your lunch. You go to your usual spot for lunch and sit down with your friends. You are still upset but just let it go for a while. Then you are off to the afternoon. Daniel picks you up at your lunch spot, but no happy birthday. You are now too upset to even say anything.
"So I was thinking after school, since its Friday, we can go to the mall or something" you suggest.
"Uhhhh- I don't think I can. My mom
has like some dinner for work tonight and she is making me go. Maybe tomorrow?" He asks
"I guess. Yeah sure"
"Okay well I don't want to be late. See you after school" he kisses you on the cheek and disappears into the hallway.
The rest of the day goes really slow. You just want to go home lock yourself in your room and cry. Finally when the last bell rings you get all your things and try to leave. But someone stops you.
"Hey Olivia, we are going to work on our art project now. Can you stay?" one of your friends asks.
"Sure" you answer.
It felt like that project took forever. But when you are finally done you call your mom to come pick you up. She gets there in like 20 minutes. The whole car ride you don't say a word.
"Are you okay?" She asks.
"Yeah, I'm fine." You quickly answer.
She pulls into the driveway and you walk to the door. You find your key and unlock the door. All the lights are off and your mom is still in the driveway talking to your neighbor. You turn on the light.
"SURPRISE!!!!!!!" A billion voices shout out. You nearly have a heart attack. Then you feel the tears. You start laughing and thanking everybody. You see Daniel emerging from the crowd.
"You like it?" He asks.
"I love it. Was this you?"
"Yeah it took a lot of effort but it was all worth it. I felt so bad pretending we forgot, but i tried making this birthday memorable."
You start blushing. "I honestly thought everyone forgot"
"I will never forget you." He pulls you into a hug and kisses you.
He reaches into his back pocket and pulls out a box. You open it and find a necklace. Its a beautiful diamond heart.
"Omygosh" you say gasping.
"Hope you like it," he says, "its the second prettiest thing I've ever seen...after you." You start crying and hold him close.
This is, by far the best birthday ever.
