A woman sat on a front porch, watching a boy with blond hair play with grass in the distance. A man walked out of the house with tea. His pink hair was pulled back in a slick ponytail. The woman took the tea and sipped it lightly. Her black hair waved in the wind as she and the man laughed together.

A scream erupted from the village. She looked up from her tea and set it down.

"Mommy?" the boy asked as he toddled to her. She ran to him and pulled him close.

"You stay here, ok? Mommy will be right back," the woman said to the boy and she tightened her embrace. After her words were spoken she ran to the other and ran into town.

"Mommy! Wait! Come back!" The man rushed to get the child before he ran after the woman.

The man with the ponytail piked the other up in one fell swoop. They ran inside, grabbing any food and supplies they could carry before making their way into the woods.

Screams filled their ears as a fire began to engulf their home. The boy cried and shouted for his mother but the man carrying him kept running, far into the forest.

"Techno! Look!" the boy shouted as he flipped off of a tree branch, twirling through the air and landing gracefully on a large boulder.

"Nice," the other said as he tossed some twigs to the side. They didn't stay in their small bundle but the man didn't really mind since he just hopped away. "Get a fire going."

The boy nodded and climbed down from his perch, gathering loose twigs as he went. He straightened them into a near pile. He took out two rocks, clicking them together until the twigs caught flame.

Not soon after, the man returned with logs and dropped them near the boy.

"So, Tommy, have you been counting the days till your tenth birthday?" Techno asked as he laid some meat on the fire.

"No. Have you?" the boy replied and he leaned onto a tree.

"I have, only because your mother wanted me to."

"Hah! I don't even remember her... it's been how long?"

"4 years cause I give you a birthday gift each year, remember?"

"Oh yeah! What's it going to be this year? Please say we get to go somewhere!"

"Well, Dream is bringing a cake so isn't that all you could want?" Tommy groaned as the other rotated the meat. "Ok... ok... we'll go into a village, happy?" The boy cheered. "Now we'll rest early, for your big day tomorrow."

It's not that Tommy didn't like Dream, it was that Dream was really weird. Like over average weird. Whenever the man would take his mask off, it was like you'd be staring into a dark room and he would just shove food and stuff down it. Tommy woke up once to the man throwing up everything and going into the forest to bring back meat. Tommy didn't want to even think of inviting him to their pack of VOIDs.

VOIDs or Variables Of Independent Darkness took humanoid bodies as a 'shell' and lived until the body decomposed. Most VOIDs tended to cover up their shells with armor or other clothing out of fear of showing cracks or places where only darkness was visible. That was why Dream often wore a mask to hide the large crack across his face.

"It's tomorrow?!"

"Yep, marked on the calendar and all." The man tossed the other an old calendar from 4 years ago, one they had taken from the home before it was destroyed.

The boy opened it up and looked through the pages. The earlier pages had four strokes on them while others had three, making the date and day.

Tommy laid back, closing his eyes.

"Don't you want anything to eat?" Techno asked as he took the meat off of the fire. Tommy shook his head as Techno took a bite. "You're sure?"

"Fine, just a bite or two," Tommy said as he held out his hand.

The man handed the other some meat and the boy ate it hesitantly. It wasn't too bad but barely had any kick to it.

After eating, he curled up and fell asleep. Techno fluffed his hair and poked the fire, watching the ashes fly into the night.

Quiet footsteps approached from behind. It seemed more like someone in a march to the older. Techno drew his sword but immediately stood down because it was just Dream holding a birthday cake with a scribbled,
"Happy birthday Tomy- 10 years old-"
with red frosting. Techno smiled at the other and patted the ground near him.

Dream wore a long green robe, whatever was under it was hidden by the night's darkness. The sinister grin of his mask was illuminated showing all of its dirt marks.

"Welcome," the first said as the man set the cake down on a steady log.

"Is he asleep?" the other questioned as he observed the child. Techno nodded which gave the other a bit more ease.

"So, how were your travels? I haven't seen you in quite a while."

"Excellent. My meals have been plentiful and I am advancing quite quickly. I believe that in a few more years, I may finally get out of my shell."

"So you're really devoted to this, huh?"

"Oh yes. You should join me. He can come too." The man in the mask pointed at the blonde-haired boy.

"No. I fear that he has too much humanity in him for that. He isn't like us in the way where we don't care for others."

"Preposterous. Even so, there hasn't been a VOID like that since the lights went out."

"What if there's still one left."

"I hate the fact that I cant check," Dream huffed as the other stroked the fire.

"I would too. But whatever he is, I'll be keeping him safe." There was a brief pause before either man spoke.

"When's the last time you've had a real meal. Not a deer or whatever you find in here. Like a human for a meal?"

"Too long."

"You can't just fend off your hunger forever you know. When you get some time alone, you should go into the village and we can have a nice feast."

"I'll be fine here, thanks though," Techno said as he leaned into his brother.

Techno and Tommy weren't actually brothers, they just acted like this since they had been together for many years. Since Tommy was too little to remember much about his mom and Techno was the only adult, he relied on the other to help be a parental figure.

"Suit yourself," Dream spat, words cold as ice.
