A casual conversation with the Dreamcaster isn't exactly on Cornelia's bucket list.
"So," she started.
Dave looked amused at the idea. "Hell no. Dito---err... sa Land of Dreams---ako pinalaki ni Sandman."
"AHA!
But then again, maybe this wasn't a piece of information he was suppose to share to a mortal?
"So ampon ka nga?"
"Teka, bakit ba matanong ka?"
Sungit.
Not when they're already stuck in this bizarre realm filled with evil creatures!
As much as she hated him keeping secrets from her (yes, she will never forget about that detail), the girl somehow liked getting under his skin.
In short, sarap lang asarin.
In the end and in the middle of the hallway that led to who-knows-where bordered by stained glass windows draped with black satin curtains adorned with gold embroideries, Dave waved his hand and created a monobloc chair out of sand.
"Maupo ka muna, mahaba-habang kwento 'to."
'Ano na namang pakulo 'to?' Dave magically changed into formal clothes.
Mukha na siyang lecturer sa mga kolehiyo. The fake eyeglasses only added to the mood.
"Sandman took me in at a very young age," panimula ni Dave. 'Wow! Sana lang may ganitong self-writing board din ang mga professor namin sa ECU,' she mused and listened.
"Tama ang sinabi mo kanina. Isa akong...'mortal' dati. There was a typhoon and the dam released water and..." Dave paused, trying to remember that day. He created a net out of sand and fished me out of the water."
"Isda ka pala, eh."
"Kanina 'ampon', ngayon 'isda'?"
"Character development ang tawag diyan."
Natawa si Dave at inayos ang salamin. "Anyway, he rescued me from death and asked me if I wanted to be his apprentice.
Paglabas ng tanong sa bibig niya, she instantly regretted it. The Dreamcaster's expression turned sour, as if admitting that out loud was just too much to handle.
Bago pa man maiba ni Cornelia ang usapan, he added, "I was an orphan.
"Uy, grabe ka naman," she attempted to humor him. "You're talking as if you don't care whether you lived or died that day."
"I'd be lying if I say I care about my life, Elia.
Cornelia was speechless.
Kailanman, hindi niya siguro maiintindihan ang pinagdaanan ni Dave, but that doesn't make it any better.
Now, thinking back to that tragic day Dave almost died... Did Sandman doom him to become the next Dreamcaster?
Cornelia stared at the writings on the board.
"Wala kang pakialam sa kahapon... Pero anong mga pangarap mo para bukas?"
Dave avoided her gaze. He cleared his throat and, with snap of his fingers, biglang bumalik sa pagiging buhangin ang blackboard, upuan, at salamin sa mata. She soon found herself sitting on the floor, in the middle of the dark hallway lit only by the light coming from the nearby window.
The kitchen is just around the corner.
Cornelia was left pondering on what happened and staring at the discarded lumps of sand in front of her.
