Reassurance is something I've always yearned for. A simple 'good job' would've made me feel as if there was a point to everything I've gone through. I never had the privilege of knowing that there was someone who would support me if I ran into a problem. I was always on my own.

I remember everything; the faces of the people with whom I coexisted, the fear, the uncertainty, and, unquestionably, the pain that came along with it all.

After experiencing a similar childhood, hatred towards others is expected; it's human nature. Following constant betrayals, my only wish was a blessing of rage that would manifest within me. That's something that ought to keep me going. I'd convince myself that everyone else was the problem and I was the victim.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to convince myself of such lies. Truth be told, I essentially became the being I loathed.

"Hello! Please take your number badge, thank you. Be sure to wear this on your chest at all times, please. And be careful not to lose it, okay?"

I outstretched my arm, cautiously taking the badge handed to me. The small, green man sauntered away without another word as I stole a glance at the number displayed on the pin.

105

Keeping my eyes down, I walked in a straight line until I came face to face with a wall. There wasn't any point in wasting further energy, might as well take this as a chance to observe the other contestants.

After fumbling with the badge for a few minutes, I rested the back of my head on the wall, making sure to keep an eye out for shady-looking individuals. So far, I've seen no one worth my time. I watched as more applicants trickled into the poorly lit area, all receiving the same greeting.

"You seem like you need a refreshing drink. How 'bout it?"

I looked up, meeting eyes with a round man sporting a badge with '16' displayed. He smiled at me and extended his arm, holding out a can of soda.

"No, thank you."

He seemed to get the hint, so he decided against offering a second time, although he was keen on hanging around for a bit.

"The name's Tonpa. I don't recognize you, which could only mean one thing. You must be a rookie, right?" He paused, awaiting a response. After a few moments, he continued. "Not much of a talker, huh. What about I tell you what I know of the other participants? It's my thirty-fifth attempt, so I guess you can call me a veteran."

An uncomfortable silence passed between the two of us. I diverted my gaze in hopes that he'd finally give up.

He cleared his throat. "Uh, I guess I'll see you around..." He muttered, scratching his head.
