Months of training passed, and although you already knew the basics of Nen, you trained alongside your companion, further honing your skills. Eventually, it was time for the Water Divination Aura Screening.
✭
You and Kurapika watch as Izunavi carefully places a filled glass of water on a tree stump. He glances around the surrounding area and picks up a leaf, examining it before placing it atop the water. The experienced Nen user watches as the leaf floats from one side to another, waiting for it to remain stationary.
"Kurapika, you're going first." The black-haired man beckons the teen, inviting him to sit before the stump. "Today, we're going to determine which category your aura falls under." The teacher explains, keeping his voice stern. You could feel a tinge of excitement bubbling in your chest - you have heard of his test but have not had the time to attempt it.
Izunavi explains what actions Kurapika must take, mentioning the usage of Ren. With a deep breath, the boy increases his aura as he rests his relaxed hands around the glass, and almost immediately a change begins to occur.
"There's something forming in the water!" You begin, surprised by the quick and obvious result. "So you're a Conjurer, it's clear." Izunavi finishes your thought.
You glance at Kurapika, noticing his lack of reaction. His face is cold and expressionless, though his voice oozes disappointment. "A Conjurer..."
"A type whose specialty is manifesting their aura."
"I see," the blond states, looking up at his teacher. "I was hoping I would be an Enhancer." He ends his sentence with a sigh, his eyes once again trailing down to the ground. You are unsure of what to say, uncertain of whether or not you should attempt to lift your partner's spirit.
"Unfortunately, you can't change what you're born with." The man continues, going into detail as he draws a chart displaying different Nen categories and the maximum mastery obtainable by a Conjurer. The two seemed so involved in their conversation, you felt uncomfortable with interrupting them to find out your own Nen type.
"Chains?"
Your attention was once again brought back to the discussion at hand, and it seems to have gotten heated.
"Yes. When you said I was a Conjurer, that was the first thing that came to mind."
Your eyes darted from the two seated figures as they exchanged words.
"Interesting, but why chains?"
It was a good question, and you found yourself wondering the same. As you peeled your eyes away from Izunavi, you felt a shift in the air, the heaviness multiplied. Your vision caught sight of Kurapika, and a pit of dread settled in your stomach. The view was unsettling; the composed, level-headed boy had suddenly taken on a dangerous, malicious even, vibe. His brows fell low, and his eyes narrowed as he pronounced his next words.
