chapter 9: virmire

Everyone stared in shock at Kaine. His glowing blue eyes seemed lifeless as he stood like a statue before he shook his head. "ugh, my head. what happened?" he asked as he stumbled. Garrus caught him and gently placed him onto a seat. 

Tali quickly sat next to him and allowed him to rest on her shoulder. "you started freaking out and your eyes turned blue for a few moments." she said as the others sat down. Benezia then spoke up "it seems you suffered from the side effects of removing my indoctrination."

Kaine nodded but clutched his head. "yeah, I guessed something like that would happen."  Ashley then spoke up, looking with worry. "kid, you sure there aren't any permanent effects? the last thing we need is you turning during a mission." with that, everyone looked worried at Kaine, the idea of Kaine turning sickened them. "yeah, I will be fine, it should go away soon." Kaine said as he reached for another drink. 

the room stayed silent for the rest of the night. Most weren't sure whether to speak or to just stay quiet. Eventually, everyone made their way back to the ship and rested. Kaine was forced to sleep in the medical wing, just so Chakwas could keep an eye on him.

Kaine groaned as he opened his eyes. The bright light of the medical wing burned. Slowly rising, he saw Dr chakwas typing on her omnitool. "ah, welcome back. We should just move your stuff here, make it your permanent room." chakwas joked as she spun to face him. "what's happening." Kaine asked as he rose to his feet. 

"We are heading to virmire. The hunt for saren is finally ending." chakwas confirmed as she handed Kaine a plate. "eat up, you need energy for this." 

Kaine nodded and began to eat. The dish consisted of vegetables and a ham and cheese sandwich. Swallowing the food he then spoke. "how's everything? I don't remember much." Chakwas sighed before looking with a stern look. "well, you suffered from the side effects of freeing Benezia, then drank a lot of alcohol. On that note, you are banned from drinking alcohol from now on." Kaine's head whipped up, "what? c'mon," he protested, but chakwas' strict look showed that it was futile. 

Eventually, joker's voice spoke over the speakers. "hey Kaine, Shepard wants you down in the barracks. We're about to hit virmire." with that chakwas nodded and allowed Kaine to leave. Soon reaching the barracks and seeing, Ashely, Kaiden, garrus, wrex and Shepard, all waiting. 

"about time, I thought you would be missing the action." wrex laughed as he and Kaine head butt each other. "wouldn't miss it," 

Kaine nodded before glancing at Shepard. sharing a look before turning to the others. "so, how we gonna get down there?" garrus then quickly answered, "they got a lot of anti-air weapons. tons of cannons that will blast us out of the sky if we are too close. We also got the news that we got a salarian STG team down there. But they can't help with those turrets."

Suddenly Ashley spoke, "how about we approach outside of it then? you know, take the mako and use a biotic shield from Kaidan. Kaine and garrus can then blow apart any enemies that get close." with that everyone rushed to get ready. Shepard hopped into the driver's seat while Kaine stood on top. Garrus, wrex, Kaiden, and Ashley were crammed into the mako as we hit the road. 

Shepard stepped on the gas and flew out of the hanger. Quickly activating the thrusters as all six wheels hit the ground and skidded to a stop. "Good work Joker, clean drop. Keep yourself at a safe distance until those towers are down," said Shepard as she drove.
