Note: I couldn't find much on this au so a lot of it is just obscure. If it is inaccurate I do apologize
Most mortals chose to reject the gods, calling them nothing but stories for children. Those who did believe chose only a few as worthy of their time, respect, and faith. The gods that were respected held high favor and importance in the eyes of the humans were the gods of Life, Skies, Fortune, Wisdom, Knowledge, Hope, and Hearth.
Other gods were looked down on and unfavorable, the gods of Death, Magic, War, and the agents of darkness that have risen. You were different though, you believed in the original stories of the gods, how they bring balance to the world, and how without them, the world would descend into darkness.
The gods saw your faith, unwavering and true, without opinion on which of them was worthy. Although they themselves had their own ideas of who should be worshiped, they admired your loyalty to them, after all, you were the only mortal who knew you couldn't judge the gods, but rather they judge you. Even the 'dark gods', Death, Magic, and War, appreciated the attention you gave them, one more so than the others.
One of the gods of death was extremely fond of the attention you gave to him. No mortal has ever accepted him like you, even acknowledged how important he was to the world, balancing life. He found himself watching you, unafraid of anything thrown at you, accepting of everything that you saw and felt, even him. One thing was certain, he felt seen and appreciated because of you. You saw him as beautiful.
The other humans despised you for your beliefs, afraid that the children would mimic your foolish actions. One day, the village had enough, they ended your life. The very god that admired you so greatly had to be the one to take you into the world beyond, and he wasn't happy.
When you awoke, your ghost lingering above your body, you at first were terrified, not knowing what this was. That's when you saw him, the eldest brother of death. "Are you.... Death?" you asked quietly, still trying to understand your situation.
Death nods, "Yes. I am Sans, the eldest god of death. Most call me the painful or sorrowful death."
"I was killed... wasn't I?"
"Indeed, but do not worry, you will be safe in the afterlife."
"How is it?"
You saw how taken aback Death... er Sans looked at your question. Had no one ever asked him before? That wouldn't surprise you, most mortals probably tried to fight him, escape him, bargain with him. But you, you accepted it with open arms.
A blue hue covered his cheekbones when you approached him, still awaiting an answer. Finally, he spoke, "Many mortals fear me, they would say it is terrifying, horrible, agonizing."Unwavering and still curious you tilt your head, "And what would you call it, Sans?"
"It is my home, my domain, I find it peaceful. Why do you ask, (Y/N)?"
"You know my name?"
"Of course, you think of me differently than any mortal who came before you, you even think higher of me than my fellow gods. You amaze us all. Of course, we know your name."
You smile, "I'm glad I am seen in a good light by you all."
"You didn't answer my question."
"Oh. I'm curious is all."
"About death?"
You nod, feeling yourself smile at how astonished you made the god of death. This confirmed it, Death has never had such kindness shown to him. "Why not? You come to everything eventually, you're natural. I guess I don't understand how much people dislike you."
