Headcannons portrayed:
- Dream (and Nightmare) have the power to calm people down along with other things depending on the twin. (idea from a comic titled "What if Blue joined the Bad Guys?" By: DarkxSoulzyxCaliberx on Instagram)

Note: Dream uses He/She/They pronouns in cannon! In this story I use He/Him but reference this part of him.

Your life has been turned upside down. Everything you knew and loved is gone, destroyed. You limped among the rubble, calling out for any other survivors, desperately trying to find someone, anyone else. Pain shoots through your body with every step, soon it becomes unbearable.

Just as you slump over against a rock you hear a voice, "Hello? Is someone there?"

"Over here," You called back, trying to stand again, failing and falling back down with a hiss of pain.

Soon a skeleton dressed in yellow and black comes over panic in his eyes. "Oh my stars! You're hurt!" He looks over your wounds carefully, doing his best not to hurt you. "Are you okay? Who else is hurt?"

You felt tears begin to fall down your face, not only because of the pain but because deep down you knew you were the only one left. "I... I'm fine."

The skeleton noticed your tears and gently presses his forehead to yours, "It's okay. You're safe now." A sudden calmness flooded over you, like a wave of peace. The skeleton smiled gently, "Better?"

"How did you...?"

"It's magic. I'm sorry I didn't ask first but considering your physical state, any sort of panic would only hurt you more. Let's get you patched up, yeah?"

The skeleton helped you up, being careful as to not hurt you any more than you already were. The two of you made your way to what looked like a portal, the mystery monster must have noticed your hesitation and attempted to reassure you, "It's okay, it'll take us to someplace safe so you can rest."

After making your way through the portal and into a pure white void, he sets you down calmly, "I am sincerely sorry for what happened. It's not often an AU collapses like that."

"I don't understand. Where are we? Who are you? What's an AU?" You asked, trying to figure out what exactly was going on. Nothing was making any sense and the lack of information this skeleton gave you didn't help.

Yellow creeps onto the skeleton's face, "Did I not introduce myself? Oh stars... My name is Dream. I am the guardian of positivity and light. This place," he motioned with his head to the void around you, "Is the space between universes. AUs are hard to explain. It's like different cities, where everyone is different but also similar."

With your questions somewhat answered you let Dream wrap up your injuries. Although he was still a stranger, you felt like he made everything better just by being there. That's when your mind began to wonder. If he hadn't found you, what would you have done? Would you even have survived on your own in all that rubble?

Your attention was captured by Dream waving a hand in front of your face, "You good?" You hummed a response and looked at you patiently as he repeated himself, "What is your name?"

You look at him quietly for a moment, "(Y/N)."

He smiled brightly, "It's nice to meet you, (Y/N). Until you're better, or you find a place to stay, you can stay with me while I work. I usually just go from AU to AU making sure everything is alright. And if it ever gets to be too much I'll slow down for you."

"Sure. I'd rather not be alone right now." You admitted, feeling a little childish at this. After all, he was still a stranger to you.

He nodded in understanding, "You rest up a little and we can leave when you're ready." He caught you off guard, no one has ever been this nice to you, so considerate. It was nice. The two of you talked quietly to one another, and Dream was patient with you as you tried to ready yourself to travel.

As time went by, you had followed Dream to several universes, and with every universe you traveled to, you saw a new part of him. While assisting him with his work, you eventually became his permanent helper. It didn't take long for you to adjust to his normal positive aura, no longer affecting you.

Even having adjusted to it, you still felt happy with him around. Anytime he relied on you, you were ecstatic to help out. You knew it was your job, but something about it felt much more than that. Thinking about it, and talking with some of the friends you've made, you realized you were in love with him.

"Hey Dream?" you asked one day while walking through the void.

"Yeah, (Y/N)?" he answered, smiling at you gently.

"I want to tell you something."

"What is it Sunshine?"

You felt your face grow hot, you were already nervous but that nickname always made you flustered and wasn't helping. You shake your head to clear your mind and take a deep breath, "Every time I work with you I get this warm feeling, a feeling like the whole world can't hurt me when you're around."

"You mean my aura?" He tilts his head at you, stopping to take in what you were saying clearly.

"No, your aura feels different. This feeling is much deeper than that, it's in my soul. It's kind of like..." You looked for the right words. "It's hard to explain."

Dream holds your hand gently, "Take your time."

You chuckled, trying to lighten your upset mood, "If you keep saying that you'll be stuck here forever. I can't explain it, that's why I've been so scared to tell you. Words can't explain it."

Dream presses his forehead to yours, like when you first met, "You know what? I'm okay with that. Because I'll be 'stuck here forever' with you." He chuckled at the flustered expression that crept onto your face, "Did that embarrass you Sunshine?"

"No. Just caught me off guard." You look away slightly, face covered in blush.

You both knew that wasn't the truth, but Dream didn't fuss about it. "Hehe. Okay, okay." He smiled, turning to continue heading toward the next AU, "You look cute when you blush though."

"Well, you look wonderful every day, no matter how you chose to identify." You told him with a smirk, taking your chance to fluster him.

Dream stopped in his tracks, face as yellow as his cape, "N-no fair. You can't use that against me." He gave you an embarrassed glare, knowing full well you just played the genderfluid card on him.

"Very fair. If you can embarrass me I can embarrass you. Plus you know you like it." You cooed, nudging his arm in cocky satisfaction of turning the tables.

"You're lucky that I love you too much to leave you here in time out, Sunshine." Dream sighs, trying to cool his face by fanning himself.
You followed him as he started to continue on. Did he mean that? "Hey, Dream?"

He hums in acknowledgment, opening a portal to the next universe. He then turned to look at you so you had his full attention.

"I... I love you too."
