Warm sunlight bounced off your face as you left the local bakery with two goodies, one for yourself and one for your best friend, Nightmare. The short skeleton spent most of his time deeply invested in his books, so much so that he often forgot to enjoy some of the little things, like desserts. On days like these, you were determined to make sure he enjoyed more than his books. That's why you've decided to have a fun day around the town with him. Even if you had to force him to even go into town, he was going to have a good day.

You make your way up the hill to the Tree of Feelings, knowing that Nightmare would be reading underneath it like usual. You found him right where you expected to and the predictability of your pal made you smirk. He was so lost in his novel that he didn't realize you were there until you waved your snack in front of his 'nose'. He looks up with a tired look, almost like he had been in a daze while reading that you just woke him from. "Hi, (Y/N). Watcha got there," he asks, setting his book aside and patting the ground next to him to invite you to take a seat.

"Turnovers. I found one you might like. Freshly baked," you ended in a singsongy way as you took a seat. You handed Nightmare one of the turnovers, still warm to the touch. The smile on his face as he took the treat from you was precious. Rarely ever did he smile like that, then again he rarely has reason to. Especially with how most people treated him.

Nightmare gently punches your arm as he took a bite, his smile even brighter, "How did you find a dessert that isn't sweet? What kind of turnover is this?" It was hard to find a 'sweet' that he actually enjoyed since he preferred sour flavors.

"It's lemon. I just kept trying them until I found one that I knew would fit your odd taste." You respond, taking a bite of your favorite turnover. The silence that followed was a tell-tale sign that the two of you were enjoying the snack. It didn't take long for the two pastries to disappear and the day of fun to begin.

You stood up and dusted yourself off a little before motioning for Nightmare to do the same, "C'mon. I have the whole day planned for us."

The Skelton rolls his eyes slightly as he follows suit, giving you a small look of retaliation. "I know I can't get out of this. So, what's the plan?"

"You'll see." You coo gently and take his hand, heading back into town.

The fun-filled day of the two of you going to all of your favorite places, as well as Nightmare's favorite places, left you both exhausted. As the sun began to set you walked him back to the tree where Dream was waiting for him. "Will I see you tomorrow?" Nightmare asks, his pinkie intertwined with yours.

"No," you admitted, "I have to go on a trip to another town. I'll be gone for a few days." You tried to give your friend a half smile when you noticed his happy expression falter, "But as soon as I'm back we can hangout. I promise."

He nodded slightly before mimicking the smile he's grown so fond of seeing, "Alright. You be safe."

You gently punch his arm as he goes to join his brother atop the hill, "Don't be all antisocial while I'm away, okay? Hang out with people. Maybe have fun with Dream's friends, eh?"

"I'll try." Nightmare chuckles as he gives you a quick hug before racing toward Dream with a small wave towards you. You waved back, already missing the short Skelton that you cared for so deeply. Dork.

A few days later, you had returned home from your trip and although you were tired, you intended to keep your promise. Making your way through town, you stopped by the bakery to get some more little treats for Nightmare and headed to the tree. But, as you got closer to the hill, something seemed off...

You froze in your tracks as an ear-piercing scream echoed in the air. People run by you quickly in an attempt to get away from the source of the scream. As the scream came again, you realized that it was far too familiar. "Nightmare!" You shout, running quickly through the crowd in a desperate attempt to reach your friend.
