Life has never been particularly kind to you, it chased you to try and find relief from it all on Mt. Ebbot, and it cursed you as a way to laugh at your failure. This curse is one that makes you believe that life is truly against you. At first, you didn't notice it, until you were attacked and killed by the monsters under the mountain. You awoke back in the flowerbed you had fallen onto when you arrived, a fresh flower grown onto your body.

At first, they were easy to deal with, easy to hide, and harmless. They sprouted along your arm and stomach and slowly spread across your body. Every time you died and returned to this spot, a new flower was there. Soon you began to struggle with traveling long distances or running away from battles.

It didn't take long for Sans, the cause of several of your flowers, to realize your pain and your curse. Your kindness touched his heart, for even in your suffering, you kept a smile on your face. Ever since he was moved by your caring nature he has sworn to protect you.

Now the two of you are sitting in the all too familiar flowerbed where your new flowers grew. Silence filled the cavern around you as you tried to find the freshly grown plant that marked another death. A gentle hand on the back of your neck told you that Sans found it, a heavy sigh escaping him, "At this rate, They'll cover your face. I'm sorry I couldn't prevent Undyne from getting you this time."

You cast a glance behind you and to the tall skeleton that practically risked everything for you time and time again, "You're fine, Sans. I tripped. That's why she caught me." A smile crosses your lips to try and comfort Sans' guilt.

He pulls you gently into a hug, the back of your head resting on his chest, his breath relaxing your body against him. "That doesn't mean I couldn't have helped you. You can barely run anymore. Most of it's my fault."

Looking up at him, you rest your hands on either side of his skull, making him look you in the eye, "You we're protecting your friends and your brother. I don't blame you for that. You know that." His head leans against your touch and silence surrounds you once again.

After a minute or so, you speak again, "Let's try and head back. I'm sure we can make it this time. At least to the city." You begin to try and stand, legs shaky from the roots and vines that wrap around your legs.

Sans rests his hands on your sides to help steady you with a half smile, "Just let me know if you need a break. I don't mind carrying you or finding a spot to rest." He gently holds your hand as you make your way through the ruins, head high with confidence in your teamwork.

Your breath catches in your throat as you collapse on the other side of the river. Water soaks you to the bone and you struggle to try and regain your strength. Undyne had lost track of you, finally. Though, in order to escape, you did have to jump into the rushing water beneath you both.

Sans was nowhere to be seen, last you saw of him he was trying to get Undyne's attention so you could escape. He wouldn't want you to lay out in the open like this, even if it hurt to even move. You glance around you and find a small cave behind the waterfall you just traveled down. Slowly and painfully, you made your way there to rest.

It seemed as if ages passed before you heard any sign of a living creature. Footsteps quietly approached your hiding spot, the wet grass making it hard to identify the size of the monster. You closed your good eye, the other blinded long ago by flowers, waiting to wake back up in the ruins.

"(Y/N)? Sweetheart?" Sans' voice whispers in concern and longing for a response.

You exhale the breath you had subconsciously held in, "I'm here, Sans." Your voice was low and forced since you still were struggling to calm yourself.

It didn't take long for Sans to squeeze his way next to you. His eyes sparked with relief for your safety, yet still rang with concern for your current state. He wraps his jacket around you, pulling you close to try and help you warm up and relax. Almost instantly, your pain ebbed and your mind cleared.

"Did we do it?" You asked in a whisper, holding onto his shirt with your face laying against his chest.

He lays his head on yours, "Yeah. We did it. Hotland isn't far. We're almost there. You can rest now."

Realizing just how drained you were, you nuzzle against him and close your eye. You try to thank him but your words don't even reach your throat before sleep claims you.

The warm air around you wakes you from your rest. You look around, confused for a moment. The environment was suddenly new, oranges and reds surrounding your vision as Sans carries you through the new territory. "Morning, Sweetheart." Sans smiles as you yawn quietly.

"Is this hotland?" You ask as you try to wordlessly get Sans to let you walk on your own.

Understanding, he gently sets you down. "Yup. I'm not sure how your flowers can handle the weather here. So we gotta keep an eye on that." He walks beside you, glancing around for danger that may lie around any corner.

Looking down at your overgrown arm, you noticed the outer rim of the petals look dry and dark, as if they were beginning to wither. "What do we do if they get worse?" You question, suddenly fearing this new danger.

"Find you some water. Shops may sell it but that means having to hide you. That or we get out as fast as possible." Sans admits, scratching the back of his neck.

"It seems like every other place we go to my flowers are at risk of dying. First the cold of Snowdin and now the heat of Hotland." You sigh, returning Sans' jacket to try and keep a small bit cooler.

He nods, trying his jacket around his waist. "I know. I wish I could take your pain away. Lighten your risk."

You look over at him, confused. "Then you'd have to deal with the same problems I have." You point out, wondering why he'd do such a thing.

"Yeah, I know. But I'd rather suffer with you. Hell, I'd rather suffer for you. Seeing you like this... It's horrible. No one should experience that." He mumbles with an unreadable expression. "If I could just take it all away, all your pain, your issues, your fears, I'd do it in a heartbeat."

You stop, grabbing his arm sleeve, "Sans... I... I appreciate that but... Even if that were possible, I won't let you go through this too. I can handle it. I promise. We've almost made it, right? I can do this. Kindness can be enough to fix all this."

"How do you know that for sure? That it'll work? What if nothing changes and you're like this forever?" Sans questions with a sorrowful tone.

"It changed you, didn't it? It can change others too. Even if it doesn't change them, it can change me back. I'm sure that if I can get to the surface, I can be better again. I can free myself from my curse... And you from this prison. Until then, I have a big strong skeleton to help me and take care of me." You smile, determination filling you.

He looks at you as if you've defeated him with your words again, "You really know how to convince me into giving you what you want." He sighs and continues waking hand in hand with you, "Let's not keep our salvation waiting then, eh?"

You follow next to him, leaning against him with a content sigh. Sans would do anything to keep you safe, and you'd do anything to free him and yourself. You couldn't ask for a better person to walk through this with.

Sans gently picks you back up, kissing your cheek lovingly. "Alright, Sweetheart. You gotta save your strength. Let your big strong protector carry you for a bit longer."

A laugh escapes the two of you as you roll your eyes in a playful way, "Maybe you're too protective, eh? I can walk on my own you know."

"I know," he nuzzles you gently, "But I like to spoil you while I can. Plus, you never know when you'll need all your energy."
