Before shiro crash landed onto earth, Lance had a pretty normal life. So suddenly getting involved into a war with no fighting experience would be overwhelming.
And obviously he's going to have long term trauma from all the fighting and killing and death, so he'd find a distraction.

So whenever he's upset for some reason, Keith takes Lance to Barnes and noble or any other bookstore and Lance just haves the time of his life.
Like whenever he sees a book that he finds interesting he'll just hand it to Keith who just smiles fondly and be like:
"He could give me the whole world and I'd still carry it for him."
