" i think they were three. i've spent a while at this shop deciding if i should buy this shirt. " shukichi said

" really " shinchi said

" i play shogi " shukichi said as he put on his glasses

" i have good memory. " shukichi then continued

" i see. so a car broke through the guardrail above that cliff and fell into the ocean? " an inspector

" yes " yukiko said

" and this man was the driver, and you called the police after pulling him from the car. " the inspector said

" i'm the one who called, but they are the one who pulled him from the car " yukiko said

" who are you two? " the inspector asked

" we are just students studying abroad in the united states. we returned to japan and came here with my family today. " himari answered

" anyways, is it true that there was another person in the car? " inspector asked

" that's what they said " ran said

" what prove do you have? " inspector asked

" i simply thought there was another person, since the passenger window was open all the way. " himari said

" the driver's seat was on the right side. it would be strange for only the passenger window to be open.
the other person most likely opened the window before the car filled with water escaped, blending in with the crowd. " shuichi said

" but couldn't they have opened the door instead? " inspector asked

" not with the water pressure. there's still air inside a car immediately after it sinks. they couldn't open the door because of the water pressure. that's why they chose to open the window and escape through there. " himari said

" so they abandoned their friend, and fled alone. " inspector said

" no, this man wasn't wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident. " shuichi said

" huh " the inspector said

" he struck his head on windshield when the car crashed into the guardrail. it broke his cervical vertebrae, killing him instantly. it's probably safe to assume the passenger determined he was dead when they received no response after calling out to him, so they decided to escape on their own. " himari said

" but why would they pretend to be one of the crowd here? if they were a victim of an accident, they wouldn't need to hide. " inspector asked

" probably because there was a reason they had to conceal themselves. " shinchi said

" a reason to conceal themselves? " inspector said

" was there a robbery at a store that sells watches in it" himari asked

" what? we did receive a report about an hour ago that two thieves entered a watchmaker's shop about a kilometer from here. how do you know about an incident that hasn't been reported by the news yet? " inspector said

" there was a bag in the back seat of the sunken car. it was packed full of brand-name watches with their price tags still on them. " himari said

" they could have been wholesalers. making a delivery. " inspector said

" then they would've put them in plastic bags or boxes so they wouldn't get damaged. only a thief concerned with stealing the watches and escaping would so casually stuff them into a bag. " shuichi said

" did anyone see the faces of the thieves? " himari asked

" no. they were both wearing ski masks. based on their voices, we know one was a man, but we don't know the gender of the other. " the inspector said

" i see " himari and shuichi thought

" hey, ms and mr.pierrot " shinchi said

" i bought all the costumers who went shopping after the car fell into the ocean. " shinchi said as he pointed at the three

" you're sure, right? " shinchi asked shukichi

" yeah, this chubby man bought a t-shirt and swim trunks. this woman bought sandals. and this lanky guy bought a Hawaiian shirt." shukichi said

" what's the big deal anyways?! " the lanky guy said

" it seems this man who was driving the car that fell into water had someone with him. i'll be questioning each one of you. " the inspector said
