Tres: Because she was lonely. I think what makes that book amazing is the strong realism it has.
That some love doesn't have to have amazing chemistry and passion, sometimes it is made up of shared experiences and tastes, humor, mutual empathy and compassion, tolerance and understanding of each other's faults and admiration for each other's good points. In short, compromise.
Then that omen in this world are given two choices, either to be devoted to their family or go on to make a career - through Jo's character we can see that women have the capability to nail both the aspects.
That's prolly one of the amazing books I've ever read
