Things with Joyce's health deteriorated quickly. When the biopsy came back to the hospital, they discovered she had a tumor and needed to operate quickly before it could grow any more.

That led to Buffy and Dawn, as well as the whole gang waiting anxiously around the waiting room of the hospital. Dawn was asleep with her head on Buffy's lap. Kitty was resting her head on Giles' shoulder and playing on her Game Boy. They'd been there so long that she was almost completely through all the levels on her Hamtaro game.

"I'm going to see if the girls need anything," Giles said quietly to Kitty. She nodded and simply shifted to lean her head on Teddy's shoulder, who was watching her play. When Giles walked over to the others, Riley woke with a start, who'd been dozing off. "Just me. Sorry. Can I get you anything?"

"No, thank you," Buffy said, shaking her head.

"Riley?"

"No, I'm fine."

With nothing to help do, Giles remained fidgety. But he knew pacing the waiting room would only make Buffy more nervous than she already was.

"What time is it?" Willow asked Xander.

"There's a clock behind you, Will," he said, staring off at nothing as he worried about Joyce.

Willow pouted and eyed his wrist. "I know, but there's a watch right above your hand." In response, Xander shoved his wrist in her face, letting her tell the time on her own. She frowned at what she saw. "That can't be right." Then she turned and looked at the big clock above the nurses' station. "Oh."

They had been there for hours.

Buffy sighed loudly and leaned her head against the wall. "I can't stand this. What's taking so long?" she asked.

"It doesn't mean anything," Riley told her.

"You think?"

"I'd worry more if your mom was out of surgery quickly. Might mean that, you know, they couldn't do much," he explained.
