"Something horrible is going to happen, Giles."

"It was an earthquake, Buffy. A not uncommon occurrence in southern California. No reason to think it was anything more."

"I dunno," Kitty mumbled, looking up from the second book in the Bone graphic novel series that Xander lent her. "She did kinda sorta die last time there was an earthquake. I'd call that a good reason."

"Exactly!" Buffy explained, glad that someone was backing her up.

After an earthquake occurred in Sunnydale, a sinking feeling washed over Buffy. She was convinced another apocalypse was among them, even though she didn't have any proof. Now, she was sitting outside the apartment with Giles and Kitty, not wanting to talk inside in case there was an aftershock. Giles really only half-paid attention to Buffy's rambling while sticking red pins all over a map. And Kitty didn't particularly think the world was ending either, but she had nothing better to do than listen to Buffy, so she backed her theory up, much to Giles' annoyance.

"Yes, I know that, and therefore I completely understand your anxiety," Giles told Buffy.

"Oh, good. Because I'd hate for my little untimely horrible death concern to be ambiguous," Buffy replied, holding back an eye roll.

"But unless evidence suggests otherwise, I think that we can assume that it's shifting landmasses and not a portent of some imminent doom," he said. Then Giles lifted the huge map of Sunnydale, showing off the cluster of red pins. "Now in the meantime, I've got a few theories about our mysterious commando friends."

"Oh. Really?" Buffy nervously sat down and glanced at Kitty. She was still the only one who knew about Riley being a military soldier — after talking about it with him that morning, Buffy discovered the program was called the Initiative.

"Yes. Now based on the locations of our various sightings, and Spike's reluctant description of their underground installation—"

"What if the quake was a sign?" Buffy interrupted, jumping back on her feet. Now, she couldn't have Giles getting too close to Riley. "A bad omen and we just ignore it? There is going to be a lot of red faces when the world comes to an end."

Giles sighed and stood as well. "Buffy, if the quake heralds some such catastrophe, I'm sure there will be other signs to follow, which will afford us plenty of time to avert it." Then Giles focused back on the map. "Now, I believe that the commando installation is either very close to, or directly underneath your school. Now if that is the case, I'm convinced that one or more of them may be in your very midst."
