SOMEWHERE ON THE MOUNTAINS

Ayla's POV:

We have been travelling for three weeks rising at the crack of dawn everyday and stopping when the sun starts to set. Only Legolas, being an elf and all, doesn't get so tired but the others - especially the hobbits- aren't coping so well. We started walking on the mountain track about eleven days ago. On the second day it started snowing, I swear I have frostbite. Walking through the snow is so exhausting, almost like running on the beach. My legs would be drenched if it wasn't for my leather boots. We are walking along a narrow path when Frodo slips on some ice and falls. Aragorn quickly grabs his arm to prevent him from falling.

"The ring" gasps Frodo as he pats his pockets and checks his neck for the fifth time. I look for it in the snow and spot it a second later than Boromir, who has already picked it up by the chain.

Everyone freezes. Boromir is transfixed by the ring and not in a good way.

"Boromir?" Aragorn says hesitantly inching towards him.

He doesn't bat an eyelid, he just stares at the ring intently.

"It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing," Boromir says as if in a trance,"such a little thing".

I hold my breath even though I know what happens. The only sound is the howling wind above us and our heavy breathing.

"Boromir" Aragor says putting his hand on his sword hilt, "give the ring to Frodo".

A few tense second pass and Boromir snaps out of his trance giving the ring to Frodo smiling.

"As you wish. I care not" he says as he ruffles Frodo's hair.

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and keep walking behind Pip.

Legolas's POV:

It has been three days since the incident with Boromir and the ring. The hobbits chatter from time to time but that is the only talking that has happened in a while, which is a shame really since we could get to know each other better. Just as I was walking up to Gimli to talk to him I hear something in the wind. I stop and listen carefully trying to catch some words.

"There is a fell voice in the air" I say urgently. I can't tell whom or what it is but it is definitely not good.

"It is Saruman" Gandalf shouts as rocks and snow start to fall from above.

"He is trying to bring down the mountain" I hear Aragorn say over the sound of the blizzard that has started, "Gandalf! We must turn back!"

I look at Gandalf waiting for his response. It is 'no' as I expected. He then proceeds to raise his staff and chant into the wind to counterattack Saruman's spell. Saruman's voice strengthens. Suddenly lightning explodes on the mountain right above us. We all look up in horror as a snow avalanche thunders down towards us. I grab the closest person to me, which happens to be Gandalf, and throw ourselves against the cliff face while the snow crashes onto the narrow ledge. After I dig ourselves out I see the hobbits have been recued by Aragorn and Boromir. I see Gimli climbing out of the snow with snow stuck in his beard. I chuckle but my smile quickly fades as I search for Ayla with my eyes. I finally see a hand waving from a couple of meters in front of me. I wave Aragorn over and he helps me clear some snow from on top of her so she can breathe.

"Give me your other hand" I say as I hold her hand that is above the snow.

"I can't"

I look at her puzzled.

"I have Bill's reins in my hand and I refuse to let them go" she explains.

I sigh and crouch down putting my hand under her armpits and pulling. I manage to pull out her torso and Aragorn grabs the reins from her hands. I then grab both her hands and pull. She breaks free from the snow and falls on to the cliff face.

"Shit!"

We all turn to look at her.

"Uhm... Ayla, what does that mean?" Merry asks innocently.

She looks at him and her eyes go wide in shock briefly before returning to normal.

"It's a... uhm... an exclamation I grew up with.. uhm, yeah. It is slightly rude so.... uhm, yeah, don't say it" She says hesitantly searching for the right words.

I chuckle at her odd wording and shake my head. She sees me doing it and pulls a face. The hobbits find this very funny and burst out laughing. I just keep chuckling and shake my head a little more.

After we all recover from the avalanche Boromir urgently says "We must get off the mountain! Make for the gap of Rohan and take the West road to my city"

Gandalf shakes his head at the suggestion.

"The Gap of Rohan takes us too close to Isengard" Aragorn responds.

At this Gimli interferes, "We cannot pass over the mountain. Let us go under it. Let us go through the mines of Moria"

Gandalf looks concerned and I clear my throat to get his attenion. He looks up and sighs before finally saying "Let the ring bearer decide".

Frodo thinks about the options before muttering loud enough so everyone can hear "We will go through the mines".

"So be it" Gandalf says gloomily.

"No! It isn't a good idea" Ayla says.

We all look at her surprised by her outburst.

"The ring bearer has made a decision" Aragorn says sternly.

"No but-"

"He made a decision Ayla" Gandalf interrupts

"But you don't uderstand Gan-" she tries but Aragorn interrupts her.

"What is so bad that you would preffer to go though the Gap of Rohan?"

"I can't see it clearly but-"

"There, it is not certain. We will go through Moria" Gandalf says with a finalizing tone. Ayla exhales a sharp breath, sets her jaw and shakes her head slightly. We then keep walking, Ayla a couple of meters behind everyone muttering under her breath. I can't make out what she is saying but I catch a couple of words that sound like "ducking brass mole" and other words such as "falls", "trolls" and "dead". I decide that I heard wrong and continue ahead, but deep down I have a bad gut feeling.
