Wei Wuxian was watching Wen Chao's small army slowly approaching. Perhaps the resentful energy was right. Its whispers in his head were suddenly a lot more appealing and harder to resist. He should take revenge, should he not?
Wen Chao had hurt his family. His actions had made Jiang Yanli cry. They had broken Jiang Cheng to the point of becoming an unresponsive puppet. They had obliged Wei Wuxian to do everything he could to save what was left of his family and home. It had cost him his golden core and three months of fighting for survival in the Burial Mounds.
However, this last part at least had one positive consequence. He was now way stronger, even if he had to be careful to not let himself be manipulated and overtaken by the resentful energy. Before, he had been too weak to stand up to the Wen army. It was not the case anymore.
He could finally do something. He could take revenge. He could get rid of Wen Chao and thus hopefully cause a great deal of damage to the Wen army's forces. Or at least to Wen Ruohan personally. The Qishan Wen sect leader also deserved to know how much it hurt to lose his loved ones.
At this point, Wei Wuxian was sure that if it came to it, he could even face the whole Wen sect army by himself. Just him and the resentful energy. If there would be no other people around, he would be able to let it loose. To unleash its full potential and satisfy its greed without him being swallowed by it in the process.
Well, those were far in the future still. Perhaps Wei Wuxian would not even get to fight in the war. But what he could do now, that was another thing entirely. He could take revenge for his family. He could kill Wen Chao.
He prepared to attack but stopped himself at the last second. No, this would not do. That bastard did not deserve an easy death. He should get to know what real suffering is.
At that very moment, Wei Wuxian decided. His lips parted in a cruel smile. If he was doing this, he could as well make it worth his efforts. Yes, he would hunt Wen Chao down and make his life a living hell before finally killing him. That is what real revenge should look like. He should make him suffer. The voices inside his head roared, the resentful energy agreed with him.

For the next week, Wei Wuxian was relentlessly following Wen Chao and his troupes. It was not as if he could not catch up with them. In fact, it was the contrary. He was always where they were. He would keep himself hidden but would always be just a step away from them.
The need for slow revenge was consuming him from within. It was all he could think about. He was killing the soldiers one by one, right under Wen Chao's nose. He was also observing how it was taking the Qishan We sect's young master apart bit by bit.
He was not satisfied though, and neither was he happy with his achievements. He still did not want to let go of the wall he had built around his heart. He could not let himself slip, not even for a second. He had a feeling that although the resentful energy seemed perfectly happy with his actions right now, it would try to control him again as soon as he turned his back to the revenge.
However, those thoughts made only an occasional appearance. He made sure they would not distract him from his revenge. He had even put for later the meeting with his siblings.
He had initially wanted to go see them because he had been unsure of what he should be doing. Now, he was not anymore. He had found his calling in pursuing Wen Chao. And until that man would be killed, just as all of his underlings and his mistress, Wei Wuxian would not rest.
It was taking a long time though. He was already starting to have enough of running after Wen Chao and killing his men only one by one. Controlling and ordering the resentful energy was taking a toll on him. Both on his body as he was tired most of the time, and on his mind. The voices were by now never quiet and they were screaming seemingly right into his ears.
He had also searched for other possibilities of fighting the Wen soldiers. Using resentment was fine, but it could get out of his hands too quickly. He needed also other ways. Luckily, it was not too hard to tweak with talismans so he could activate them without spiritual energy. He was ready.
Wei Wuxian decided that it was time to finish everything.
He followed Wen Chao to another supervisory office. Over the last week, he had destroyed several of them, but this one was by far the biggest one. This was as good a place as any to finally accomplish his revenge.
Wei Wuxian waited until night fell. Then, he stealthily put up talismans everywhere, especially around Wen Chao's and Wang Lingjiao's rooms. He had been spying on them the whole time, he knew which ones were theirs. In the end, after he prepared the stage, he stepped out of the shadows and let the hell loose.
First, he dealt with the soldiers, not giving them even a single opportunity to retaliate. Everything was over before some of them noticed. And those who did were way too drunk or terrified of him to do anything.
Now, it was time for the main course.
He continued playing his flute as he approached Wang Lingjiao's room. He did not know how it sounded to others, but the song definitely terrified Wen Chao's mistress to the utmost. Actually, to the brink of madness and even beyond.
When he finally got to her – he had taken his time – he found that she had hung herself up on a beam in the ceiling. She was already dead. He had no idea what exactly she had seen or imagined but it seemed to have accomplished its goal.
Wei Wuxian did not feel anything as he cut off the silk scarf that was keeping her in the air. There was enough resentment in her so it would be easy for him to control her as his new puppet. He sent her to Wen Chao's rooms and followed her slowly. He wanted to torture the Qishan Wen sect's young master a little more before eventually having him killed by his own mistress.
He heard a loud scream. It would have made all his hair stand if he was not already used to such displays of suffering and madness. By now, nothing could faze him. Especially because he was the cause of that distress.
However, when he arrived, he could not see Wen Chao anywhere. That coward had fled! Well, it was only postponing the inevitable really.
Wei Wuxian stopped playing his flute. There was no more reason for that, no living soul was left in the Yiling supervisory office. He should go after the runaways. He would definitely catch Wen Chao and Wen Zhuliu before too long.
