Now prepared to face the ghosts in the mansion, Luigi and Blue went back inside. As soon as they did, Luigi recognized one person in the mansion. To his surprise, it was Toad. He was crying next to one of the stairs.

"Boo hoo hoo! Where did you go, Mario?" Toad cried, "Waaaaaah! Wah!"

"Toad?" Luigi said as he and Blue walked up to him.

"Huh? Luigi?" Toad stopped crying and looked up to see Luigi and quickly smiled, "Waa... Wow! It's you, Luigi! You finally made it! Oh, joy! Thank goodness!"

Toad then took notice of Blue and got curious.

"Ummm... Who's that with you?" he asked.

"Oh, I'm Blue. I'm with Luigi, too," she replied.

"What're you doing here anyway, Toad?" Luigi wondered.

"Well, Mario asked me to come here to look for him. He left when he heard that you'd won a mansion, and he never returned!" Toad said.

"What happened next?"

"Th... then when I arrived here, the mansion was full of ghosts, and I didn't see Mario anywhere, and I kind of freaked out."

"Well... they weren't the only one to be tricked with this 'free mansion' deal," Blue said, "Me and my owner Steve also got a letter that said the same thing. Steve already went ahead of me and I don't know where he is."

"Please, please, please, you guys HAVE to help me find Mario!" Toad pleaded, "If he doesn't get back, you have no idea how upset Princess Peach will be! The last time she experienced losing loved ones, she was beside herself!"

"Don't worry, Toad," Luigi assured, "We'll find Mario. It was what I came here for anyway."

"And there's no way we're leaving without him or Steve!" Blue added.

"Yay! Thanks, Luigi and Blue! You made my dark and stormy night!" Toad replied, "I wish I could do more, but I got too scared."

"I feel you, Toad."

With that, Luigi and Blue began their search on the second floor. They started where they first met Professor E. Gadd in the Parlor. After some searching and collecting cash, no ghosts were found. But then, Luigi remembered that ghosts avoid light and spotted four candles with purple flames. He and Blue used the Poltergust 3000 to put out the candles, but at that moment the painting started talking.

"WHO put out my candles?!" it boomed, "YOU TWO. Mr. Lime-Green and Ms. Blue-Spotted?"

Luigi and Blue nodded before Luigi spoke up.

"But you see... we were just trying to find ghosts. Is putting those candles out... dangerous?"

"Well, dark rooms are dangerous around here... Yesss..." another painting answered.

"THEY love the dark... and now THEY will get both of YOU! Bloo-heh!" the third painting cackled.

"Now you're both in for it! Blugh-huh!" howled the fourth picture.

"Just like little Red-Cap, Green-Stripes, Ice-Queeny, and Snow-Puppy before you two..." said the fifth portrait.

"May you both wander in darkness... forever!"

Luigi and Blue knew they were referring to Mario and Steve, but who were the other two? Luigi thought the Icy-Queenie was maybe Elsa. But his thoughts were stopped when his fear was coming back. Blue noticed he was shivering again.

"Are you AFRAID of the dark, little man?" the first painting mocked, "Are you? Huh?"

"I-I-I..." Luigi was cut off when the painting boomed again.
