New Life

I looked out the bus window and watched the trees go by. Feeling the boredom rise even more, I looked to my best friend Nixie who stared straight ahead with a peaceful look in her blue eyes.

"Aren't you bored?" I asked.

Nixie's dark blue bangs fell into her eyes and she swiped them back before saying, "not especially. I thought you were excited for the new farm, Bambi?"
She said in a monotone voice. She definitely did not like talking as much as I did.

I leaned my head back on the seat. Nixie's grandfather passed away and she inherited a large standard farm including a house with two bedrooms. She offered for me to stay with her since my parents kicked me out and I needed a home badly and explained she needed help to run it. Being the animal lover I am, I agreed. Nixie was more into planting crops and I volunteered for the animal part.

"I am excited, it's just... long rides bore me. It's already been two hours." I looked at her and she softly smiled. Nixie was very pale with soft lips and she had large blue eyes. She was always the 'beautiful' one and I envied that. My skin was darker and my hair instead was a light pastel green, and my dark green eyes weren't as glossy or large as Nixie's.

"You bore too easily. I never have heard about Stardew Valley though." Nixie thought for a moment.

"I heard mom talking about it before I left." I cringed at the remembrance of my parents.

"Oh she knew about it?"

"Eh. Kinda." I said, scratching my head. Suddenly the bus came to a stop and I perked up.

"Stop at Pelican Town." The man driving yelled back at us.

I smiled and grabbed my backpack then crawled over Nixie. "Ouch!" She cried as I managed to elbow her in the face over my excitement. I rushed out and jumped to the ground, dust rising over my boots.

The sun felt warm on my legs and bare arms but the cool breeze added to the wholesomeness of the area.

"It smells so fresh!" I smiled and slung my backpack over my shoulder. I didn't know the directions to the farm but in the distance to my left, I saw a path leading to a small town. "I gotta go look around, Nixie!" I said, looking back at her. She dragged her large suitcase off the bus and waved as it drove away.

"Don't you want to help me at the house?"

I gave her an exasperated look.

"Okay, fine. But you have to come back soon to get settled. It's right down here." Nixie pointed to my right and giggled when I clapped my hands excitedly.

"Great! I'll be back in like thirty minutes." I promised and started my way to the town.

It was much smaller than what I'm used to but I had a feeling most of the residents knew each other. I continued walking in front of a small store that said 'Pierres'. Walking backwards, I looked up at the open sky not filled with smoke or tall buildings and smiled happily.

"Hey!"

I stumbled a bit when I felt I bumped into someone. I turned around quickly, my smile fading a bit and a man stood there with an annoyed look. "Watch it." He growled at me.

"I-I. Um. I..." Words seemed hard to form. He seemed to have dark purple hair and a rough stubble on his face. I noticed he was wearing a Jojo uniform and hat.

"I'm Bambi." My smiled instantly returned and I stuck my hand out. The man glanced at my hand with mean eyes then walked right passed me without another word. I blinked a couple times and watched him leave. "Oh." So Stardew Valley already introduced me to a rude person but I tried to not let that get me down. I decided to go into the small store and saw an older man sitting behind the desk. That must be Pierre.

I walked up happily and stood on the other side of the counter.

"Oh. Hello!" He looked at me from the newspaper he was reading.

"Hi there! I'm Bambi Carter- just moved in with Nixie Greenstone." I introduced myself.

"Well, aren't you a chipper one, " he said smiling, "I'm Pierre it's nice to meet you. You can buy all your farming needs here."

I gasped and looked around, "do you have animals?"

"No, no, mostly seeds and tools or a backpack for-"

"That's amazing!" I said, "what kind of seeds?" I asked, leaning on the counter.

"Parsnips are the best for-"

"I'll take 15 of those!" I said, reaching for my wallet.
I realized I interrupted quite a bit and internally screamed at myself for that awful habit.

He gave me an amused smile and handed me the parsnips in a bag adding, "if you're interested in animals you might talk to Robin about building you a barn or coop."

"Thanks for the tip!" I responded.

The walk home was peaceful and not crowded like the streets where I lived were.
Nixie was already outside, pulling weeds and seemed exhausted. I tilted my head and set my backpack on the porch of the small cabin. "Hey, what's up?" I asked.

"We need to clear this field if we want to make any money. I don't even have the seeds yet." Nixie sighed, wiping sweat off her forehead.

I happily reached in my bag and took out the seeds to show her. Nixie grabbed them and read the label then smiled at me. "Papa had some tools in the corner of the house we can use to get started. Go get them and we can plant these today." She added. I nodded and walked into the house. There were two small rooms with the doors opened, both with very small beds.

Just like Nixie said- the corner of the room had a hoe, sickle, and a pickaxe. I'm assuming Nixie had the watering can to keep the seeds hydrated.

Sure enough, once we had the seeds planted Nixie went down the rows with the watering can.

That night at dinner, Nixie managed to scrape together a few cheap salads for us to eat on our first night at the farm. "Did you meet anyone in town? I met Lewis and Robin, it was a pretty nice welcome." Nixie said, crunching on a tomato.

"Pierre is super nice and runs the store there." I said,  then drinking water. Nixie gave me a soft smile. "And... a really rude guy. I don't know his name but he just towered over me. Apparently works at some Jojo incorporation." I shrugged.

"I hate Jojo's incorporation..." Nixie sighed. She must've been remembering her awful life back at the city when she worked for them. "How do you know he worked there?" She asked.

"Uniform. Maybe I'll bump into him again." I said.

"You're very optimistic." Nixie said.

"Thanks!"

"It's very annoying at times." She added with a smirk, making me roll my eyes.

Still. There was something about him that interested me.
