"I can't do it." I whined, holding onto the side of my bed frame. Shane gave me a sad look, tilting his head slightly. He had been helping me slowly regain my strength for about a week now. Harvey had given me specific instructions to exercise once every two days to help my leg gain it's muscle again after the cold from the storm basically froze it."Here," Shane grinned and walked over, "let me help." He held my waist with one hand then my elbow with the other. Slowly, I took a small step forward then leaned ever so slightly on my injured leg. Shane held me closer as I began to shake. "Okay, I think I did it enough." I said.
Shane held me upright and my back against his broad chest. I looked up at him. He had a small smile on with soft eyes looking back. He leaned down and kissed the bridge of my nose."You did great, chickadee." Shane said. I smiled back at him and adjusted myself as he turned me around to get back on my bed. He then picked me up bridal style and nestled me in the covers. I put my pillow up against the bed frame to lean back on it.
"I feel like I didn't." I jutted my bottom lip out. Shane took my hand and rubbed my knuckles with his thumb. His large and rougher hands easily covered mine.
"Well, we gotta take it slow. That's all. And you can get up and stand now... remember when all you could do was sit up?" Shane reminded me. I sighed.
"Yeah, I remember. But Nixie has been caring for the entire farm herself."
"I help with the animals." He pointed out. I smiled up at him. Shane looked better than ever, especially since he was sober and hadn't touched alcohol for some time yet. I had a suspicion he may have had a drink the day I was put in the hospital but after that, he busied himself with helping me that I don't think he had any time to drink.
"I'm lucky." I said. He shook his head with a confused look.
"I am. I'm super lucky I have this sexy guy to help me." I ran my finger along his jaw. Shane let out a deep chuckle, "I'm lucky I have this small, green haired, wild chick as my girlfriend." He scooted closer to push my bangs out of my face.
I giggled. My eyes focused on his hand wrapped around mine. How his white skin mixed into my darker skin. His fingers were thicker and hands with more muscle. My fingers were small and thinner but also pretty long.
"Have you ever wanted to get married?" Shane asked. I widened my eyes. He leaned back, ran a hand nervously through his hair, and shook his head quickly. "N-not anytime soon, but I just..." Shane scooted closer to me. "I never thought about marriage or being with anyone but lately that's changed." Shane kept his eyes on the floor.
I leaned forward and planted a kiss on his cheek. "I know what you mean. And yes. Someday." I wiped non-existence dust off the covers.
"Hey, Bambi!" Nixie called from the living room before walking in. As she entered my room, Shane stood up to signal he was about to leave much to my dismay. "Guess what!"
"Yeah?"
Shane shifted uncomfortably on his feet and put his hands in his pockets. Nixie held out some papers in her hands, "Lewis put us in charge to decorate for the Feast of the Winter Star!"
"What's that even about?"
"You don't know what it is?" Shane asked. Nixie looked curiously at him as well. We waited for Shane to tell us the history behind the holiday. He cleared his throat and rubbed his neck.
"In the night sky of winter, uh there's a bright star only visible from the valley. It's really cool, I guess." He said. I could tell Shane hated explaining things to others. I figured he would probably always be anti-social with me, Marnie, and Jas as the exception.
