Hye-wol's shoe clad feet taps the puddle of water beneath her as she stares at the distance, totally zoning out the conversation behind her. They check her out constantly, trying to comfort her but all she did was shrug them off with the excuse of wanting to be alone. She's playing the part of mourning family member a little bit seriously but she has to if she wants her to survive.
Saving Na-yeon was never on the plan. She was supposed to prioritize saving herself rather than trying to save others but Na-yeon's her cousin. She might not be from this world but the memories and the bond novel Hye-wol and Na-yeon have in this story plays a bigger role in her sudden change of mind.
Na-yeon might be written as a bitchy and privileged character but she has shown nothing but love and care towards her ever since she woke up in this world. Albeit not the usual way of showing love but it was far from her character arc. Might be a character development or just because she was often misunderstood because of the mask she likes to portray.
The rain still didn't stop, it continuously pours down from the heavy, dark clouds with the constant slicing on the sky from the sharp tendrils of lightning and the loud rumbling of the thunders that makes the zombies on the ground crazier, snarling and trying to find where the noise is coming from.
She was facing away from the group but through the accumulated puddle on the rooftop ground, she was able to hear the light footsteps approaching her. Soon, she felt a presence beside her. From her peripheral vision, she saw On-jo placing both of her hands on top of the railings as she looked far ahead.
Silence covers them for a second which immediately gets broken by the shorter lass' voice, "Here. Sweets will make you feel a little bit better." her hand was outstretched, holding out a small box of strawberry milk, "We don't have banana milk. I guess Joon-yeong and Wu-jin forgot to grab all the milk boxes on your table. Are you in the mood for strawberry milk?"
"On-jo, I don't want to lead you on but I'm straight," sometimes. She decided to leave the last word but it was better to become transparent as early as possible.
But On-jo just snorted, grabbing Hye-wol's hand to place the milk box on her hand, "Silly. I love you but it doesn't mean I love you romantically."
On-jo heaved a sigh, retracting her hand after making sure that Hye-wol's fingers were wrapped around the milk box. She starts fiddling with the hem of her sleeves, preparing herself to pour her hearts out, "I'm an only child and I longed to have a sister that I could relate to, someone that I can protect and spoil rotten. Someone who will become my number one enemy but also my natural best friend. My mother's dead and my Father's not up to marrying anyone anymore so I know having a sister will be next to impossible," she pauses, exhaling before continuing, "And that's when you showed up. I didn't know but I immediately felt gravitated towards you. I found your smiles cute and your whole attitude admiring. You're taller than me but you woke up the deepest urge I have to protect you. I don't know how to explain it better but every time I see you laugh wholeheartedly, the urge to preserve your innocence is strong. Of course it wasn't like that immediately. I was able to contain it for a long time until the zombie apocalypse. When I lost my father on that timeline, you were the only one who managed to calm me down. And then when Gwi-nam kidnapped you, I thought I would lose my mind. The urge to protect becomes even more stronger to the point that it leaves me restless."
"Wait– what? Gwi-nam kidnapped me?!" Hye-wol gasped, eyes widening in horror. That explains the deep fear I felt towards me. 'The freaking eye-ball obsessed maniac freaking kidnapped me?!'
"On our true timeline, yes," On-jo nodded, "They managed to survive the explosion and hunt us down. It was before we got to the quarantine area, in Yangdong. He followed us there and while we were busy fighting off the horde of zombies, he snatched you from us. You screamed and that's when we realized that you got taken away. Nam-ra was fuming mad and chased Gwi-nam, we followed her despite knowing the danger lurking around the area but we were so worried about you. He was taking you somewhere deep in the forest when we found him— well, if not because of Cheong-san, he will probably be able to run away with you."
