A young girl sat at her desk, wearing a suit and tophat. She dipped her pen into some ink and continued the work she already had, that is, until someone walked into her office."Miss Athina." It was Fyodor, her partner. "It appears we have a letter."
"Oh? Give it here." She took the letter from his hand and carefully tore it open.
Dear, Athina.
I, Ranpo Edogawa, am having the pleasure to host a ball and would be gratified with your attendance. You are cordially invited to spend your night, drinking and eating the finest meals and dancing. But, there is a twist. As I always like my events to be memorable, the theme of this ball will be 'murder mystery'. Attached below this letter is the time, date, and your role in this act. I do hope you attend.
Your friend,
Ranpo
"Murder mystery, huh?" Athina hummed. "This should be fun!" Attached below the letter is indeed the date and time... and the role of the detective. "Fyodor! Make sure the carriage is outside for me. I'm going to make a visit."
"Of course."
"Don't wait up for me, Fyodor. I may be a little while." Athina said as she exited the carriage.
"Of course." And with that, Fyodor signals for the carriage to move down the street. The young woman found herself in a much less wealthier part of London.
Knock knock knock
Creeeaak
"Athina!!" A man with brown fluffy hair and a disheveled/worn down suit engulfed the young woman into a hug.
"Good to see you, Osamu." She patted his back. "Where's Jenna?"
"I'm here!" Another young woman soon came to the entrance to greet Athina. She wore a dress made of rags and a white bonnet. She pulled Athina away from Osamu and gave her a hug. "What brings you here?"
"It's about this invitation." She shows the two the letter. "You're gonna be my plus one, Jenna."
"Oh actually, Athina-"
"Actually Athina, Jenna will be my plus one." Dazai pulls out his own letter and snickers. "Do you think Ranpo would be so cruel not to invite me? Hehehe~" He waves the letter in front of her face. "I am a writer you know, why wouldn't I get invited?" That's right. Osamu Dazai is a writer of multiple novels. They've become very popular in the empire. Yes, he may be popular, but it isn't enough to get him to be part of the upper class, hence why they live amongst the lower class.
"I didn't think you got invited because of your class... and since you evade your taxes."
"There's no proof of that! I'm offended!"
"Yeah, yeah, Osamu. But Jenna would rather come with me."
"Actually-"
"Yes, Jenna! Speak up and tell Athina you're coming with your father!" Sparkles surrounded the man as he held onto his daughter's dress dramatically.
Jenna sighed. "I'm not anybody's plus one. Ranpo sent me my own invite!" She held up her own invitation and the two in front of her were stunned. Jenna was considered to be in an even lower class than Dazai since she didn't have the popularity he did. "But I've decided that I'm not going."
"Wait what? Why not?" Jenna avoided Athina's gaze, embarrassed.
Dazai sighed. "She's afraid of getting ridiculed. Since she'll be the only one that's a peasant. Well, besides me, of course. But I embrace it! I like the peasant life."
