Chapter Seventeen.

The next morning I woke up and damn, I was sore. I rolled over and smiled at my sleeping love. His eyes began to flutter open and he smiled and leaned in to kiss me. We stayed there cuddling for what seemed like a blissful forever until I thought of something.

"Jack," I said frantically.

"Mhm, yeah Baby?" He said without opening his eyes.

"Did we use a condom last night?" I said as his eyes stayed closed. Suddenly, his contagious laugh filled the room.

"Shit," He laughed without even opening his eyes. I felt my stomach sink but I put a quick smile on my face. I forced a laugh and walked to the dresser and grabbed my purse.

"I'll be right back, I'm gonna go buy bagels. Want anything?" I say and Jack nods.

"Bacon, egg, and cheese, please." I nod.

"Be back soon," I yell walking out the door. I take a deep breath as I get into the car and start the engine. Before I can even think about eating I need to find out if I'm pregnant. I drive to the store feeling like there's a rock in my stomach. I pull into a parking spot and nearly jump out of the car. I rush into the store and grab three different brands of pregnancy tests so I can be sure. I quickly check out and then get back to the car and hide the tests in my purse. I drive to the bagel store and get bagels and then drive home. I pull into the driveway and feel sick to my stomach. I slowly get out of the car and pull out my keys and unlock the door. I get inside and walk upstairs and see Jack laying in bed on his phone, shirtless.

"Hey, baby," Jack looks up at me and smiles.

"Hey, babe, you okay? You look a little pale. Have you eaten?" I nod and take a deep breath as I force a smile.

"Yeah I've eaten, you just really tired me out last night," I wink and he smirks.

"That's my job," I laugh and place the bag of bagels down and walk to the bathroom. "Uh... Ari?" He called and I looked back at him. "Why are you bringing your purse to the bathroom?" He asks stifling a laugh. I force a laugh once again.

"Whoops, I forgot," I say as I run into the bathroom and quickly take out the tests. I pee on 7 sticks and wait five torturous minutes for each test. After the five minutes were up I bit my lip and looked into the sink and I suddenly felt like I was going to cry. All seven tests were positive. I quickly disposed of the tests and cleaned up and then left the bathroom. Jack was sitting on the bed and when he saw me enter the room he looked up at me with a worried face.

"What's going on? Are you okay?" He asks worried and I smile and sit next to him.

"Baby, I'm fine! If you really must know I got my period and that's why I had my purse and I'm so pale." Jacks face quickly turns red.

"Oh," He says as I laugh and kiss him.

"Come on, let's go eat."

After breakfast I decided to go visit the Mendes'. I was wearing an oversized grey knit sweater with black leggings and nude flats. I straightened my hair and applied light make up before leaving. I decided to walk so, I said goodbye to Jack and then I was on my way. I walked down our street past my house, past the woods and down Shawn's Street. I smiled looking up at the house. It looked the same as it always did. I walked up the porch and knocked on the door as I waited for someone to open the door. I waited about two minutes before Aaliyah opened the door. When she saw me her eyes lit up and she swung the screen door opened and hugged me tightly. I hugged her back and smiled.

"How's my favorite girl doing?" I said grinning. Aaliyah smiled as she held the door open signaling for me to come inside.

"I'm okay, how are you?" She said smiling brightly. I smiled back.

"I'm good." I was smiling at Aaliyah but when I walked into the house it automatically seemed different. The house seemed somber and depressing. The floors seemed to creak more and even though the house had many different colors, it all seemed like just a blob of grey. We walked to the kitchen where Mrs. Mendes was sitting looking out the window at the grey clouds drinking what looked like black coffee. She turned to me and gave a weak smile. She looked tired, she had permanent bags under her eyes and she looked like she had aged 10 years. I sat down across the table and Aaliyah left to go to her room leaving.

"So, how have you really been, Karen?" I asked with a quiet tone. She sighed and looked down at the floor and then out the window.

"I thought I could live my life. I thought I would be okay." She took a deep breath and her lip trembled as her eyes began tearing up. "But, it's not." She began to cry and she wiped her tears and began speaking again. "I'm trying to be okay, for Aaliyah, for Manny, for Shawn." She spoke quietly before continuing. "But, I can't. It hurts everyday, and I'm trying so hard but it's just not good enough." As she spoke her last sentence her voice cracked and then she broke down into tears. I felt tears well up in my eyes as I walked over and hugged her. She cried in my arms for a good 5 minutes before letting go. She dried her tears and took a deep breath. "Please just tell me everything is good with you," She said forcing a laugh. I gave a sad smile and looked to the floor.

"I wish I could," I whispered as I could feel Karen frowning.

"What's wrong, baby girl?" She said in a low voice. I felt tears well up in my eyes and I explained everything to her. Sammy, Jack being 'dead', the eating disorder, even the pregnancy. When I was finished explaining Karen just kept shaking her head and mumbling something. I waited patiently for her to say it louder but she didn't.

"Karen?" I asked. She looked up at me with sad eyes and sighed as she mentally prepared herself for her next sentence;

"So sad, a beautiful girl gone to waste."
