I walked in around 6:30 and the lights were shut off and it looked like no one was home. Great, I thought.

"Surprise!" All of my family and friends were standing in front of me. I smiled and laughed as Sammy came up and kissed me.

"Happy birthday, princess," I laughed and kissed him back. Then, the party started. There were kids running in the backyard, adults were mingling and there were even some elders drinking tea on the porch. I was talking to my cousin when my mom came up behind me and insisted to take me for a walk around the block.

"So, where were you today?" She asked nosily.

"I took a flight home and then got one back, a simple day trip." I said as she nodded suspiciously.

"Hmm... What were you doing there?" She asked quickly. I sighed and rolled my eyes.

"I was visiting Shawn and Jack, it's my birthday! They both mean a lot to me and I just wanted to talk to them for a little bit." My mom sighed.

"You can't do that again, you need to move on. It has been almost 15 years since Shawn passed away and just about 10 since Jack. You can miss them, but you can't leave the world for a day to go talk to gravestones."

"They're with me, mom. I heard Shawn today, and felt Jack. Shawn and Jack are safe, and I like to reassure myself that they really are."

"You're 30 years old, when are you going to learn?" She sighed. I stopped walking and looked up at her.

"I learned, mom. I learned when I was 17 years old. This world is cruel, sick and unfair. Shawn and Jack were the two most important people in my life at the time of their passings and I love them both, forever. I learned when I was 17, mom. I learned that this world is dangerous and it will take everything you've got until you're nothing."
