(13) – Purpose

“Well, Travis, what do you think these two lovely ladies are doing out here by themselves?” asked the man grasping Elisabeth by the waist. With a perverse grin he sniffed at her hair and closed his eyes, letting out a sigh of pleasure. Elisabeth squealed, her wide eyes trying to express her fear to me.

Travis clumsily grasped at the air, trying to get a hold on me but I ducked just in time. I side stepped right into the arms of yet another one of the hulking bandits. He leered at me as he gripped my hair in his fingers, drawing me back as I attempted to escape his grasp. My eyes watered as he tugged at my hair, but I fought to keep silent. My stomach turned at the putrid stench of his breath.

Travis, who was slightly enraged by the fact that he had not been able to trap me straight away, sneered at me and replied, “Oh, I think they want to give us some company.” Roughly forcing my chin up so I had to look straight into his eyes, he said, “Isn’t that right, sweetheart?”

“I am not your sweetheart,” I exclaimed through gritted teeth.

“I think you will be though, soon enough,” he replied. Before I could comprehend what was happening, he forced his mouth on mine. A bitter taste filled my mouth as I heard cheers from Travis’s friends around me. Against my back, I could feel the laughter of man who restrained me rumbling through him.

When Travis finally stepped back with a self satisfied smirk, I gracefully spat into his dirty face. His face reddened with fury as he shrieked, “You dirty bitch!”

Just as I saw Travis’s fist flying towards my mouth, he suddenly stopped still, his fist raised in mid air. His eyes widened with surprise as he fell to the ground with a satisfying thud. I looked up in alarm to see Elisabeth staring down at Travis’s body with satisfaction. At my quizzical look she shrugged and said, “Well, if you can do it what’s stopping me?”

I glanced over to where the Elisabeth’s capturer lay on the ground, clutching his nose as he writhed in agony. Crimson blood gushed through his fingers as he cried in pain.

Suddenly, I was free – my own capturer had, for some reason, released me. When I turned around I saw that his eyes were just as wide as Travis’s had been, and he was trembling with fear. The man crumbled piteously onto his knees, keeping his eyes on me the whole time.

“W-w-w-witches? You’re witches?”

Elisabeth and I glanced at each other and I saw that her smug smile mirrored my own. Crossing my arms against my chest, I stared down at the fearful man and replied, “Yes. Yes we are. Do you have a problem with that?”

“I do.”

I whipped around at the sound of the new, unfamiliar voice. Behind me stood a burly man with his eyes hooded by a black cloth. His mouth was set in a grim line as he stepped closer to the three of us. Looking down at my capturer with disgust he grumbled, “Such a coward.” There was a hollow thud as the stranger’s boot made contact with the man’s gut. “Be gone!” he commanded.

“Who are you?” Elisabeth and I asked in unison, our voices quiet and wary.

“I do not think you are in a position to question me. The real question is who are you?”
