Chapter 3 - Murderous

"Each woman will also be tried by water. The woman will be held under the River Ellis and if she drowns, she is innocent. If she resurfaces, she is a witch," said Frederic, gazing out at the horror stricken crowd.

It was the most outrageous thing I had heard. It meant that either way, whoever was being tried would die. It seemed that drowning was a better option than revealing oneself as a witch, when surely death would be a lot slower and a lot more painful.

He is an evil man, Claire.

"Who said that? Elisabeth, did you say something?"  I said, jumping at the unfamiliar, melodic voice. Elisabeth raised an eyebrow at me.

"Hush, Claire, this is no time for your games," she said with irritation.

"I cannot stress to you the importance of this task that the Lord has laid down for us..." continued the Bishop.

"What..." This was not making any sense to me.

It is not Elisabeth. It is me.

"Who!"

"Stop it, Claire!" hissed Elisabeth, scowling at me.

"I'm not doing anything!" I protested. "There's someone here..."

It is you I want to speak to, Claire, not your sister.

I soon realised that this voice could not be linked to anybody. It was in my head, although how, I did not know. I muttered an apology to Elisabeth and concentrated, trying to figure out what was happening.

It was then that I saw those green eyes. At first I thought they were my own and wondered why the image was flashing in my head. But then I saw the rest of the woman... her winding dark hair, her flawless angel like features. I had seen here somewhere before... she existed in distant memories that I had not visited in years. Was this real? It couldn't be...

I am real.

The woman could hear my thoughts then, I guessed. But why was she appearing only to me? Was she even real? Or was the heat of the day and my outrage at Frederic getting to me? I could concentrate on his words no longer, as the woman filled my head.

Who are you? I thought, wondering if she would hear.

That is not important. Are you listening to that creature standing up there?

"The witches must be driven out of our homes, our villages. Their very essence must be destroyed. They are soulless creatures and would steal our own souls if given the chance."

Bishop Frederic? Well, I was listening... but who are you?

That is not important, she repeated. That man is a fool, is he not?

He is, I thought uncertainly. What was she getting at?

He is a waste of space. The air he is breathing is being wasted on him.

I agree, but... The confusion was now overwhelming. She would not tell me who she was and why she was here. She just kept going on about Frederic's foolishness. Was there a reason behind this? A purpose?
