When Wilbur got back to his shared room he was slightly surprised to see Foolish back already but he didn't question it since the older had left before him anyway, it sort of made sense for him to be back before him as well since their visiting hours weren't even an hour, they were only 45 minutes.
"Hey, look at this!" Foolish rose from his bed to show off a cool shark plushie at its foot that wasn't recently there, "my sister won it for me at the arcades! Pretty cool, huh?" The brunette bit his tears back to nod along, suppressing the feeling that it should've been him with loving siblings paired with supporting parents who cared enough about him to be reminded of him through simple things - like plushies from arcades or something.
Foolish must have picked up on the musician's tense body language or the tears threatening to spill in the corner of his eyes because his tone softened into something soft and careful as he cautiously guided Wilbur to sit with him on his bed. "How did it go?" Wilbur sighed heavily, deciding to focus on not crying instead of answering, so Foolish continued. "First visits can be tough, I don't think I can forget seeing my parents for the-"
"My parents didn't come." Wilbur mumbled through gritted teeth, the sound of Foolishs steady breathing came to a halt as he moved to face Wilbur with confusion present in the way his face tilted ever so slightly. "Really? I'm sorry. They didn't even visit you?" Wilbur sucked in a breath and forced his eyes down to his hands, not knowing when he had started to tap them in beat to a random song stuck in the back of his mind. "They- uh, I don't know them." The silence was so loud and heavy that Wilbur could've drowned it in, he found himself wishing that he did drown in it, but instead he forced himself to speak again before Foolish went anymore tense. "It's fine, I never really did know them. But Eret, my social worker came." Wilbur didn't dare lift his head to meet the boys reaction, he didn't want the pity.
"Eret? Do they have sort of wavy brown hair?" Wilbur raised his head slowly, "yeah?" For a second, neither of them spoke until Foolishs' laughter disturbed the silence. "She used to be my social worker, dude that's insane!" Wilbur would've laughed too if he wasn't confused, "I thought you had four siblings, though?"
"Foster." Wilburs eyes widened in understanding before he nodded, that would explain Erets reaction earlier.. Foolish must have been the boy she used to be a social worker for that she mentioned in the hospital.***
Determination wasn't enough.
He was determined to get out of here but it didn't give him enough strength to actually achieve that. He couldn't muster up the strength to finish the offending plate of whatever steamed vegetables was offered, he was the last one at the table with the exception of his nurse that wouldn't leave his side. "You need to finish this or we'll have to give you a supplement, honey." Her voice made Wilbur feel physically ill, though that could be something to do with the fact that he had eaten more within the past few weeks than he had done in the past year. "I need to go the toilet, I feel sick." he spoke with a dry throat which was obvious in his scratchy voice. He wasn't completely lying, he did feel sick, but he also wanted to be sick. "You know I can't let you go to the toilet right now." She sighed heavily meeting the teenagers pleading gaze, she took a seat next to him while keeping eye contact. "I know it's tough, but you've been doing so well. I'd hate to see it all go to waste, and I know somewhere in there you would too. Just think of someone you really love, they're rooting for you and so am I."
Wilbur looked back down at his mostly cold plate, nobody came to mind, but he'd like to think someone was on his side. A part of him still blamed Eret, but the more reasonable side of him didn't blame anyone while missing Eret & the Watsons.
He remembered how encouraging Phil had been from the first bite of toast he took a year ago right until the restaurant 'incident' a few months ago, slowly, he poked his spoon around the plate before gathering a small spoonful of peas and shovelling it into his mouth - closing his eyes as he did so. He let his thoughts leave him until the plate was empty and he was walked back to his room, the light was off meaning Foolish was asleep.
He quietly opened the door and carefully tiptoed into his own bed, he must've been stuck at the table for awhile if people were already asleep. A frown crept its way onto his face, he wouldn't of minded some company tonight, he thought as he stared at his blank white wall.
The longer he stared the louder his questions seemed to get, what did Eret mean she knew who he was going too next? Was there even any point to a new placement - by the time he gets out of here he could be 18 already. He shuddered under the fleece blanket and tried to focus on falling asleep.
