This was it.

Today was the first day at Tensai Ai University for (Y/N) and her brother, Light.

Roughly a million different people took the special exam that was required to enroll into the prestigious school. By the way the school operated, they only chose 100 truly academically gifted students to welcome within their golden walls.

(Y/N) was able to get in with no problems at all, with her strikingly high IQ of 212. Light was close behind her on the registry, number 2 on the list of new students.

On this first day for the two of them, Light swore to himself that he'd stick by (Y/N)'s side no matter what. That was one thing that irritated him with not having all the same classes as her. Today, he quickly noticed a lingering pattern of bullies towards her. He had hoped that with the mature minds of college students, the bullying would finally cut down. It's been like this for her entire life, at least ever since he met her. People thought it was mandatory to bully and harass her and make her feel like a worthless hunk of trash, and he was the only one who could try and make any difference.

In the halls, for some reason Light just couldn't understand, people were throwing spitballs and wads of varying trash at (Y/N) as they walked. Her shoulders scrunched up but she didn't say a word. She never said any words just in general.

As he tried to shield her from all the newfound gawkers, he was overwhelmed with a rush of deja vu. Deja vu from back in 1st grade.

Across the street, the 5 year old brunette couldn't pry his eyes away from the strange girl who sat alone in tall grass in the distance. Her long straight hair covered her face and hung around her body like a curtain and he couldn't get a good look at her because of it. With his mother in deep and distracting conversation with one of the neighbors, the boy cautiously crossed the street over to the girl.

She was roughly the same age as him, only being a year older than him. He slowly stepped up to her and hovered above her. She was mindlessly playing with the tall strands of grass she had secluded herself inside. In her mind, she was counting each strand she saw while being incredibly bored. Usually her immature mind was thinking about something that no one would think a 6 year old girl would be thinking about. She liked thinking about all the advanced books she's read in the library, the ones that she was told were for high school students. She didn't care, and she somehow understood every word said.

But, right now, she was hyper-focused on counting the scratchy grass. She paid no mind to the boy who was standing above her. His head tilted in confusion and he lightly poked the side of her head. Her head shifted slightly at the contact, but that didn't make her pay attention to him.

"Hello?" He mumbled quietly to her, leaning down slightly to get a better look at her face.

"Light! What are you doing over here?" He jumped slightly when his mother frantically rushed over to him from across the street and grabbed him. "It's dangerous to be over here by yourself, Light. You could get hurt." She didn't even notice the silent girl who was sitting criss-cross on the ground as she lifted Light up into her arms and walked back to their house with him.

Over her shoulder, he was staring at the girl. It may have been a figment of his imagination, but he could've sworn her head moved and she looked at him. Her complexion was pale and her expression was blank and lifeless. Almost inhuman.

Once he was back inside the safety of his home, he peered through the curtains to see if she was still there. Sure enough, she hadn't moved an inch. So still that if you stared at her long enough, you'd barely be able to see her shoulders rising with her breathing. So still that if you touched her, you'd almost expect her to be cold. Like a moving corpse of some sorts. To anyone else, she was just another person.

To Light, however, she was something interesting.

Light had no choice but to separate with (Y/N) in order to go to class. Her first class was mathematics while his was biology. He waved to her with a smile that could make an entire building glow and she waved in return with a smidge of a grin. Pushing the door open, she silently entered the classroom and strolled over to her empty desk. The one she chose to sit at was directly next to the window in the middle row. Mean looks were tossed to her as she sat down but she completely ignored them.

While she waited for the professor to start his lesson, she was internally counting the different cold tiles that made up the floor. The tiles were white with differently colored tiles scattered around seemingly at random. She rested her cheek against her hand and looked out the window into the autumn scenery. The color changes in the leaves of the trees made some look like they were burning. The professor, Professor Harrington, opened his mouth to speak but then his expression darkened with frustration.

"Ryuga. For the last time, you need to sit properly when you're in class."

At first, (Y/N) thought he was talking to her, but his eyes were stuck on the student behind her. She glanced over her shoulder to see who he was scolding. Sitting- crouching behind her, was a raven haired student with deathly pale skin and baggy clothes. His dilated pupils looked like they would suck the soul out of her body if she stared for too long.

He looked up at Harrington, and slowly let his legs fall to the floor, his bare feet landing on his shoes underneath the table. He made it look like it physically pained him to sit normally. It made her feel slightly confused. Why would anyone use the extra energy to crouch oddly when it's easier to sit like everyone else? His hands, that were resting on his previously risen knees, placed themselves on the desktop in front of him. And she could hear a small sigh of frustration come from him.

Ryuga. I've heard that name before.

Harrington nodded gratefully. "Thank you." Ryuga nodded stiffly and squeezed his knuckles on the table. His black eyes wandered down to (Y/N), who didn't realize how long she was staring. They made brief eye-contact before she yanked her eyes away. She cleared her throat softly and started focusing on Harrington.
