“Happy Birthday!” I gave my mum a huge hug along with Harry right after me. “Thank you, Em. This cake is beautiful!” I smiled knowingly at Harry and he winked back. “Harry made it!” My mum’s amber colored eyes flashed to Harry’s and she gave him a grin, showing her one and only dimple on her right cheek.

“Oh, I’m late for work!” Harry startled me as the volume in his voice increased. “Do you really have to go?” I pouted at him and his full, pink lips curved up into a smile. “Yeah, catch you later?” I nodded and gave him a hug. He gave me a quick kiss on my forehead and left.

“I always knew you two would end up together.” I turned back to my mom and blushed a deep red. I should’ve known that she was watching the whole thing. Harry and I weren’t exactly dating. We kissed and did what normal couples did, but we never made it official.

Truthfully, I was dying for Harry to ask me to be his girlfriend. It had been almost a month since our little late-night beach event. Every time I thought he was going to ask me…he just didn’t. I was always disappointed, but I was good at hiding it from him. At first, he knew I was hiding something, but I’ve gotten better at lying. I guess that sounds pathetic, right? What a great friend I am.

Maybe we weren’t meant to be. I mean maybe he found someone else. I’d always support him if he had; I just wish he would tell me. I want to know what’s going on in his head! Before everything, we always told each other everything.

Now we’re closer, but we’re farther apart at the same time. It’s so frustrating! “You look like you want to go out. It’s fine, I’ll be alright.” My mom smiled at me as she ate her cake. “It’s your birthday. I’m not going to ditch you.”

I sat down at our huge, round table beside her in the seat that Harry had been in. It was still warm and it smelled a little like him. I sighed and stared blankly at the birthday cake, and began day dreaming…

“Emery?” It was Harry’s deep voice saying my name. I loved it when he would say my name. “Yes?” I answered sweetly. “Will you be my….” His voice stopped for a moment, and then continued. “…Coffee?” I looked at Harry’s face quizzically and said, “Will I be your coffee??” I heard laughing, but it wasn’t Harry’s. It was my mum’s.

“Em?” My mum waved her hand in front of my brown eyes and I flinched. She smiled at me and stood, picking up her plate. “What?” I asked her. “I said do you want to go to Starbucks and grab some coffee? Remember when we’d always go there with Harry when you guys were younger? I just thought it’d help.”

I gave her the same confused face I’d given Harry in my day dream. “Help with what?” She chuckled lightly and brought her plate into the kitchen. I heard the water run from the sink, and then she returned. “With your loneliness when he isn’t here. I bet you thought I couldn’t tell? Mums can tell these things though.” I gave her a weak smile and shrugged. “You love him.”

What did she just say?!!! I DO NOT LOVE HARRY!! I can’t; it isn’t right. We’re just best friends right now who occasionally kiss. What do they call it…friends with benefits? Ha, well we don’t do all that intimate stuff, but we’re close to it.

I only love him as a best friend. I forced myself to laugh and rolled my eyes. “Nice one! You almost scared me for a second there!” I decided to take her cake into the kitchen and put it in the refrigerator so that I wouldn’t have to face her. Unfortunately, she followed right behind me and began the “questioning”.

“How long have you had feelings for Harry?” I shrugged and washed my hands as slowly as I could. The water was thankfully warm and it felt good as it engulfed my hands. “Come on, talk to me! I wanna know these things!”

I didn’t want to upset my mum on her birthday, but I didn’t feel like talking about this. I wasn’t even sure what Harry and I were yet. “I don’t really feel like discussing it now. I’ll take you up on that Starbucks offer though.” She frowned for a second but nodded and led me to her car.

Hey, thought I’d update sooner as an early Valentine’s Day gift! Speaking of Valentine’s Day, I don’t really like this holiday because I’m forever alone! Yeah!! Haha, I’ll probably just listen to my fave boys (1D of course) and dream about being with them. Anyways, I hope you liked this chapter…sorry that Harry wasn’t really in it. So, I think I’m going to skip around into new months for the chapters because obviously the story is still taking place in Emery’s past. I can’t wait for the story to go into the present!

Happy Valentine's Day! <3
