"You know what I've been wanting to do recently?" Harry asked me with a grin on his face. "Nope, but I'm sure you'll tell me," I laughed and he shook his head at me whilst chuckling. "This," his arm snaked around my shoulders, pulling me towards him before he kissed my cheek. "You wanted to kiss my cheek, did you? How sweet," I smiled and Harry leaned back in his chair again, running his fingers through his curly hair.
"Actually, I've been wanting to do a lot more than that, but I'm trying to be good." I laughed loudly and smacked his head. "Oh, Harry. Everyone knows you're never good." He smirked and winked at me. "Don't I know it? Oh! What's that?" He pointed to a small, dark figure moving around quickly on the ground across the street.
Harry and I were sitting in lawn chairs in his front yard with cups of hot chocolate in our hands, held closely to our chilly faces and pink cheeks and noses. Now it was my turn to shake my head. "It's just a cat, Styles." As soon as those words left my mouth, I knew I'd made a mistake. "Just a cat?! Emmy, are you mad? Just a cat? Holy shit, cats are my life."
"Yes, I know, I know. I apologise. What I meant to say was "Oh, gosh. It's a cat. How lovely!" Harry rolled his eyes but I knew he was only joking. "Emmy, how's your mum?" He wondered suddenly, surprising me. "She's okay," I replied softly.
We'd convinced her to get treatment for her cancer, but to me, it didn't seem like the treatment was helping her. She'd lost her hair from the chemotherapy, though she would always be the beautiful person I'd known her to be my whole life. We'd just gotten a new house recently, ten minutes away from Harry's; she was there right now. Harry just nodded, but he knew what I was thinking. He felt the same way.
"You know life is unpredictable and difficult. Our whole lives, we try to live to the fullest just to end up dead in a grave full of bugs with an awfully dreary headstone in the middle of nowhere with a quote that you probably hated whilst you were alive but your crazy aunt assumed you that you liked it that will crumble to bits after a few years so no one will remember you anyway." It was very depressing actually. In order to be successful in life: We spend our younger years in torturous schooling...
We spend the majority of our adult life possibly raising children, or thirty-two cats like Harry would, working in jobs we hate, jobs we tolerate, and when luck comes around, jobs we love; although, the job that you love becomes tiresome after a while. When we finally retire from our jobs, we will most-likely be too weak to actually run around and have fun anymore, and then we're sent off to a retirement home where the highlight of our day will be Tuesday bingo games.
I don't even like bingo! "We live to die. It's unfair, Emmy, it really is," Harry told me. I nodded as I sipped my hot chocolate. "But you know, we still have to make something of ourselves. It doesn't matter if we end up dead as doornails in the end. We have to experience adventure, loss, love, unfair situations, beautiful occurances and so much more. If we're not remembered a hundred years from now, who gives a fuck? You certainly shouldn't. Your life is about you, not anyone else!"
"You have a good point there, Styles," I praised and he grinned, showing his straight pearly whites and dimples deeper than my thoughts. "When we die, Emmy, and you know we gotta plan to die around the same time so we're not lonely, I will have died knowing one of the most brilliant, gorgeous, funny people I could ever know. Of course, I'd remember you, even as a spirit."
"Let me remind you that I already know heaven or whatever will suck because I'll be up there partying with the angels while you're stuck in the fiery pits of hell. Maybe there's phones when we're dead so I can at least call you to see how everything's doing down there. Oh damn, imagine you in hell wearing a sexy, revealing, little black dress. You naughty girl, oh shit. Let me go to hell with you now that I think of it."
The tears had formed in my eyes no matter how silly he was being at the moment. He had said something so sweet and meaningful to me. "Aw, Emmy, don't cry. I was only joking. You'd surely go to heaven, you goody-two-shoes. I still beg for you to be naughty, babe, though you are so far from it."
I rolled my eyes and laughed as tears streamed down my face. "I'm glad you're my best friend," I told him and I set my hot chocolate mug down so I could hug him. "And boyfriend?" He acted as though he needed to remind me and I giggled as I buried my face into his chest, sitting in his lap.
"I love you." The words slipped out of my mouth before I had a chance to stop them. I gasped at myself and I felt Harry become stiff. I was blushing and freaking out. Was it a wrong time to admit the truth? Did he love me back? Was it too soon? Was I completely nuts?
"Well, shit," Harry complained. What the hell does that mean?! I couldn't bring myself to say anything, so I stood and moved off of his lap and onto the chair I'd been on before. The remainder of my hot chocolate was probably cold by now. "I was supposed to say it first, Emery. God damnit. I love you too."
Well...that wasn't exactly how I'd imagined him saying it, but I'll take whatever I can get from him. "Come here, baby." He held his arms out and I smiled to myself before hopping back onto his lap. "I love you, Emmy. I love you, I love you, I love you. It feels so good to say that finally."
I smiled so widely it seemed impossible. "I love you, Harry," I murmured, snuggling into his warmth. He nuzzled his face into my hair and kissed the top of my head. "Wanna have sex now?" He whispered. In a typical Harry fashion, he was cheeky and ruined the sweet moment, but I was actually happy about it. It was how he was. He was playful, completely inappropriate, hilarious, thoughtful and stupid.
He'd always been himself. I kissed his cheek, ignoring his ridiculous question. "It's cold out here. Let's go inside." I gathered our cups and skipped to the door with him following behind. "Oh, I see. 'Let's go inside' meant yes. Thank god. Your bod is hot." He laughed as I kicked his leg after setting the cups in the kitchen sink.
"Tag, you're it!" He yelled and ran away with his arms flailing in the air.
