"We need to get out of here." Five whispered into my ear, sending small, painless shivers down my body.
I gave a small nod. He stood up bringing me with him.
"You okay?" Evan asked me with sincere apology in his tone.
"Your mother... is a bitch." I spat at him, making sure to get the idea across about how much I hated her.
Five tensed up next to me. "Your mother?... did this to her?" He asked through clenched teeth.
I was not in the right state of mind, nor was I in the mood to stop Five from what he was about to do.
He let go of me, stepped forward towards Evan, and punched him.
----------
"Shit.. I'm sorry about him." I said leaning over Evan who was on the floor.
"He is very- how do I say it?" I started.
"Protective?" He answered.
I pursed my lips, not in agreement, just as a little reminder, on who was really in the wrong. Evan was now wiping his bloody nose. I looked back at Five over my shoulder, he had a devils grin plastered on his face. I rolled my eyes and shook my head, he was insane.
"Okay we better get going." I said to the two boys, one sitting on the floor holding a handkerchief to his nose, and the other grinning like he had just won a prize.
We all headed towards a familiar room, the tube room. Suddenly Evan stopped.
I looked back at him with confusion in my eyes. "I'm sorry, I can't come with you." He said in a small voice.
"Works for me." Five stated with a shrug. I elbowed him lightly in the stomach.
"C'mon, what's to loose?" I asked Evan.
"Everything." He replied blankly.
"Okay then... well I'm definitely not staying here, so now or never." I replied, trying to persuade him to come. Evan was a kind boy. He didn't deserve to be stuck here. No one did. I felt sorry for every single person in this damn place.
"I'm really sorry." Was the last thing he mumbled before walking off.
"If I knew that escaping this place, got rid of him... I would've done it a lot sooner." Five said under his voice.
I gave him an even harder elbow bump.
"Why do you hate him so much, it's not his fault that his mother is the way she is." I questioned the boy next to me.
"He wants what's mine." I heard him mumble to himself. I raised my brow in confusion.
"He is interested in you, that's why." He stated louder for me to hear.
"So what?" I for one, didn't see a problem with anyone being 'interested' in me.
Five grunted and replied in one breath. "He is not good enough for you, he doesn't deserve someone like you."
Oh..
----------
He took something out of his pocket, and quickly rushed to the tubes, he opened the latch and stuffed a rolled up piece of paper in it. He repeated it for the next tube.
"You know that's not how we do things around here." A voice that was dreadfully familiar spoke up.
I quickly ducked behind a corner, in-between the wall and the tubes. Five risked a glance at me before turning his attention to the Handler.
"Where is Gloria?" She asked Five.
"Don't know couldn't find her anywhere." He answered, clearly lying, he knew exactly where the poor old lady was. I had a feeling that the Handler also knew. There was a little groan coming from behind the desk.
Five quickly looked at me, and discreetly moved closer to where I was hiding.
"You're a great disappointment to me. You can't change what's to come, Five." She said in a bitchy tone.
"I truly find it so odd, that you can't shed this fantasy. You're a first-rate pragmatist. You belong here with us." She continued.
"I don't belong anywhere, thanks to you. You made me a killer!" He shouted back at her.
"You were always a killer, I just pointed you in a direction." She confessed.
Suddenly a sound all too familiar to me went off.
Gunshot...
My heart stopped.
I carefully looked to where Five was standing, unsurprisingly he was not there, he had escaped the painful, slow death of a bullet to the brain.
I took in a deep breath.
An alarm went off, and the Handler was still shooting at Five.
She came around, and was now standing- unknowingly- next to me.
I made myself small, so she wouldn't detect I was standing there.
I saw Five pop out behind a trolley. He looked at me with a mixture of fear and worry on his face and in his beautiful green eyes. He pushed the trolley in the direction of the handler.
"What's the rush Five? We're just getting started" She spoke up, aiming her gun at anything and everything that moved.
I slowly moved from the spot I was hiding, I crawled along the floor, towards the desk.
"I saved you from a life time of being alone. You owe me." She hissed at Five.
He caught sight of me behind the desk, and gave the slightest nod.
"I don't owe you anything, and I wasn't alone." That was the last thing that was said before Five mouthed the word 'Now'.
I ran out the door, followed by Five, he grabbed me and we both took cover behind a wall. A big explosion erupted, he covered me, using his body as a shield, a similar way he held me during the explosion at Meritech. I felt safe.
Five grabbed my hand, blue light surrounded us. We were suddenly in the tube room. He let go of my hand, and searched for a case, no clue as to what they do.
Suddenly I felt something around my neck, and something over my mouth, an arm. I grabbed the arm around my throat trying to get free, but as soon as my hands touched it, it squeezed tighter, blocking my airway.
'Not again'
"Five!" I squeaked. "What is it?" He said turning around.
"I thought we got rid of you?" Five said in a bored tone.
"Well... you thought wrong." Evan spoke up.
Evan?
Was I wrong about him? Was my lack of better judgment really clouded by the fact that he may have been interested in me?
I still couldn't breathe, I tried to lick his hand, but he didn't seem to budge. I rattled my brain for an idea, before it ran out of oxygen.
I opened my mouth and chomped down on Evan's hand.
"Ouch, you little bitch." He exclaimed, throwing me hard to the ground.
Luckily Five had fast reflexes, he grabbed me and we both ran out the door.
Five threw something behind him and another explosion went off.
We came to a sudden stop. He opened the brief case, grabbed my hand and we disappeared.
The settings changed yet again.
