Chapter 21: Against the Hard Times

News about Heather's fertility issues has reached both of their families – and Mrs Kim could not accept the fact that her daughter-in-law has a problem regarding the fertilisation, instead, she asked both of them to seek specialists who can deal with their problems. And one of her suggestions was to do In Vitro Fertilisation or sonorously known as IVF; a fertilisation process where an ovum of a woman is combined with the sperm in the laboratory dish. Usually, this artificial insemination is done for those who have trouble conceiving of their own due to numerous reasons.

Here they were, in the specialist gynaecologist where both of them have to seek a consultation from the doctor before taking the next step – by doing the IVF because it seems like it was the last option for them to have the children of their own. Since her womb has gone weaker due to a previous miscarriage and endometriosis surgery, Heather says she has never given up on her quest to get pregnant again. Although surrogate mother has become common in America for those who have infertility problems, but Heather insisted to get pregnant naturally as she did not want somebody else carrying her child as it would create another issue later.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Philip asked his wife about their new journey as he felt reluctant to do it in the first place – but for his wife and mother, he would do what they have instructed him.

"With all of my heart. Finger's cross." She responded seriously with his question that she thought sounded concerned about the process that they would be facing later. Heather was worried sick about her condition as the scars from the previous surgery have not fully healed – yet she already decided to get pregnant as soon as possible.

The gynaecologist inside the prestigious fertility clinic has consulted the couple about the procedure that they should do and she also advised Heather to recover first from her surgery before undergoing the treatment. Even though it might cost them a bit, it did not matter for the two of them as long as they would be able to be a parent for the second time. Philip was holding the right hand of his wife full of love, and could not hide the feeling that he harboured for her since a long time ago.

"Sometimes, I wonder why our relationship has ups and downs because it wanted us to stay together no matter what problem arises." Philip spoke while waiting for the result of their fertility so further treatments could be made based on the results themselves.

"You mean, you just merely accepted me nevertheless of what was happening to my life?" She furrowed her brows, wanting him to clarify his statement clearly. Because of the health problem that affected her womanhood, Heather was really insecure with herself for being unable to be like normal women that can bear their husbands a child easily without worrying about anything.

Philip nodded as he really loves Heather unconditionally, albeit she always asked him for forgiveness for her condition which was not perfect. However, he would be loving her imperfection without any complaints as he already made a vow in the eyes of God that he would never ever take his wife for granted. To show his deep affection towards her, Philip wrapped her waist securely and let her head rest nicely on his shoulder. He knew she might be tired with all of the waiting and kinds of stuff so he really wanted to let her stay comfortable even just for a while.

"I never know someone that has taken a bar exam and has a law education on his back could be this sweet." She muttered all the words with a smile lies on her pale face. Sometimes she wonders where Philip got all of the cheesy nature like the Korean drama heroes as Mrs Kim always tells her that Philip was not romantic and she should cope with it. But Philip has proven otherwise than the report made by his mother to her.

"I admit I am not a romantic person but I can be extra tacky with my behaviour when the love of my life is in the same place as mine. Perhaps, watching a lot of Korean dramas does have its own benefits." And he laughed with his own statement before Heather also followed his step afterwards. Lately, they kept on laughing even for a simple matter as they really wanted to ease down the tension that they face now.
