Despite how much of an absolute clusterfuck the day had been, Chiaki seemed utterly unbothered and it didn't make sense.

She could've died. Just poof! No more Chiaki! All because a certain under-seven decided to take her UFO on a fucking joyride through the roof of the tiny home. As if Mayuko didn't already have problems with that place, now it had to be repaired for explosion damage too...

But, no. She didn't care. It's like the event didn't even phase her. Hell, she seemed almost happy because of it, all because she got to see the thing up close. Mayuko could understand maybe finding it fascinating, sure. As normalized as the aliens were, it was kind of weird to really think about. But, to the extent Chiaki did? It seemed a bit excessive.

"Chiaki, you do realize you could've gotten seriously hurt, right?" Mayuko asked. The three girls were still in the bath, but NieA had fallen asleep so Mayuko kept her voice low as to not wake her. Lord knows she barely got any peace with the freeloader awake.

"I know" Chiaki responded, but she still didn't seem at all bothered by it. Mayuko groaned.

"Or killed" she pressed further. Chiaki just shrugged. "Why aren't you bothered by that?"

"It would've been a cool way to die" she responded casually, as though this wasn't the serious matter that it was. "I've always loved learning about the aliens and their technology. It just always gripped me, and it's like every thought I have can eventually lead back to it" she explained. "So, if I die in the pursuit of more knowledge, that's fine by me"

"That..." Mayuko trailed off, realizing she didn't have a meaningful response. After a moment, she settled with a small "I don't understand you"

"That's okay" Chiaki responded with a small smile. "People don't tend to understand me or my quirks, and that's fine. I just... Hope you don't treat me too much like a freak?"

"Chiaki, I am too poor to afford bread" Mayuko replied with a smile of her own. "I have no room to judge you"
