The both of them were staying in a motel for the 4th of July. Neither of them cared about the holiday, but Mia had never been good with the noise of fireworks (they reminded her too much of her less-than-ideal childhood), and it was much easier to block out the noise from a motel room as opposed to the inside of a car.
As the night grew closer, Mia grew more and more anxious of what was to come. Lyle tried his best to distract her from her worries, making them shitty motel coffee and turning on the television to Cartoon Network, which was wrapping things up to switch over to Adult Swim for the nighttime.
It was around 7 PM when the first explosion rang through the night, Mia flinching at the sudden noise as her whole body tensed up. Lyle sighed, sad to see his wife in such distress as he pulled two earplugs that they had for swimming and put them into her ears to help drown out the sound.
"You're safe" he said gently as the bangs became more persistent and Mia became more and more lost in her memories, clinging onto him like he was the only thing in the world. He gently rubbed her back in a repetitive and soothing motion, whispering small comforts and hoping they would get through to her troubled mind, allowing for some sort of calm. "They're just fireworks"
"L-Lyle"
"I know" he shushed her, placing a small kiss on her head. "It's okay, love. You're safe"
They stayed like that for the rest of the night.
