I stuff my hands into my jeans pockets, walking quickly towards my usual lunch spot. Kylie still hadn't replied to my many messages asking where she was, and I was beginning to feel anxious.

More or less anxious than I was in that detention room? I couldn't say.

The feeling of her hands against mine wouldn't leave my mind, no matter how hard I tried to forget.

Glancing over to the tree, I see Kylie slouched against the wood, phone in hand.

"Where have you been?" I half shout as I rush over, her head turning in my direction.

She bites her lip, "I had somewhere to be."

"And you couldn't at least answer my message, or leave a note or something?" I drop my bag to the ground and sit.

She bites the inside of her cheek as though pondering on what to say. I tilt my head in anticipation.

"It was last minute and my phone was dead." She claimed. I don't bother to mention the fact she was just using the 'dead' phone.

She shuffled closer to me, hesitating, before placing a kiss on my cheek.

We sit in silence for the remainder of our lunch.

An our after school had ended I arrive back home, Kylie in tow.

I flop face down onto my bed, sprawling my legs and arms out every which way. A rumbles from deep within me and I sink further into the covers.

Just as sleep begins to take over, I feel a vibration against my side and I release another sigh, this time from annoyance.

I check the screen and immediately my heart speeds up- could the conversation at school really have induced this??

'Mum' was the only word on the screen,- below the missed call notification- a person I hadn't heard from in years, so what could she want now?

I didn't consider her a parent after all she'd done. I turn my phone on silent and lay back down; she wouldn't receive my attention now, and perhaps not ever.

My car starts up, low rumbling radiating from the engine. To my side I notice another car doing the same, with what appears to be a woman standing beside it.

I squint my eyes to see through my early morning drowsiness and observe as she pulls her brown hair into a tight ponytail, and that sight alone causes something in me to stir.

As though she could feel my eyes upon her, she swivels her head toward me. Our eyes lock and after seeing who she looked at, she turns her whole body to face me.

She wore a teal dress stopping at her mid thigh,  showing off her long, slender legs. Legs that were toned enough to prove she was active, perhaps a runner.

My eyes travel back up to her face, taking in her features which were so clear even with the distance between us. I found her eyes still on me.

Hesitating, I lift a hand and wave. She spares a quick wave in return before opening her car door.

I do the same before taking a seat and resting my head on the steering wheel.

I hear the faint sound of tires against the road and lift my head in time to see the flash of black as Ms Deans car drives past.

The door to my left opens and the car moves as someone sits down.

"You alright Morg?" Kylie asks from beside me, the door shutting with a thud.

I start driving, "Yeah i'm good," Turning out of the street, "what class do you have up first?"

She sighs, "English. We're writing some bullshit."

I can't help but scoff, "What type of bullshit?" I ask, stopping at a red light. A light flickers on her phone.

"I dunno, regular english bullshit."

I turn to face her with a questioning look and she turns her head.

"What? You really expect me to pay attention?" A smile spreads across her face, "I have other things to think about." Her hand brushes my chest, squeezing slightly.

I bat her hand away as the light flashes green, "Stop it, it's 8am."

She flashes a grin and looks back down at her phone, "How about 8:30?" She says, "How's that for a compromise?"

I can't help but roll my eyes, "Shut up." I joke.

We pull into the school parking lot a minute later, and I step out.

"So what do you have up first then?" Kylie calls out from behind me, but my eyes were focused on Ms Dean as she walked into the school, my eyes only leaving her once she turned a corner.

"Sport, gotta get changed now before classes start." Without further explanation I rush into the school yard, offering a quick smile before doing so.

-

I pull the T-shirt over my head, then pull on the leggings. Although I looked surprisingly attractive, the shirt wrapped tightly around my breasts was clearly too small.

I push open the changing room door and step out to where the rest of my classmates stood, conversations scattered around the open hall.

But where my eyes wandered were not to the groups of students but to the girl sitting in the far corner, cigarette in hand.

For some reason my legs seem to walk over to her without any command, until I stood awkwardly above her.

She barely glances up, inhaling the smoke and staring out into the distance.

"You alright?" I ask, crouching down. She doesn't meet my gaze as she nods absently.

I frown, "You sure?"
She blows out the smoke in a plume smelling of pungent tobacco.

"Yep," She finally turns to meet me, striking blue eyes searching mine. And from the few seconds I saw into them, I knew so much lurked beneath the surface.

She gestures the cig to me, in question. I take it from her hands and inhale deeply, feeling the smoke billowing through my lungs, and focusing on just that.

She watches me quietly, and I exhale. I pass it back.

"What's your name?" Was all she said as she takes it back, bringing it to her lips once more.

"Morgan." I reply as she exhaled through both her nose and mouth.

"Mackenzie. Mack." She says, before standing and dropping the cigarette to the floor. She snuffs it out beneath her shoe and I rise.

"Better get back to class, I think we got sprints today." She says with a displeased smile. I return it.

"Yeah. I guess we do."
