Atheist or Not

I fear death

I fear death until my dying breath

I fear the pain

the anguish it welcomes.

The sorrowful tears

the overwhelming unknown

To not exist, to never to be again

All your memories washed away

with the coming of inevitable tide.

Pulled under the undertow

Swallowed in darkness

silenced

More to do

unfinished, dismal

powerless

defenseless

I fear my end

the lack of control

the control I never had

Death absolute

uncertain

Heaven?

Hell?

No creed can tell

God? or gods?

or not at all

I fear death either way

Death is the true God

It giveth and taketh away

I'm at its' mercy
