Albedo proved himself to becoming a close ally and friend for Daiyu.

The next few weeks came and went without much of a fuss. In fact, she didn’t hear nor see Mingxia since she tried to trick her into cleaning dangerous chemical spills. Daiyu thought that she maybe was assigned to a different sector of the pavilion or sent to serve the army. It didn’t matter since Albedo made it his priority to make sure her time working was comfortable and flexible. There were times where he found himself sketching her from afar while she watered the Glaze Lilies or spying on her as she ate lunch outside. Some maids still gave her trouble and wouldn’t include her at their tables or kept giving her their tasks. He continued to spy on who gave her more of a fuss and who wasn’t doing their job and made a small list to give to his aunt.

Of course, whenever you spend time with one person, the other people in your vicinity start getting jealous.

This jealousy reared its ugly head during a particular family dinner where Daiyu was assigned as the server among other no name servants. The Emperor sat at the head of the table while his children took up the remaining seats. Noelle offered to help with the plates, but was declined. Gorou’s eyes were starting to droop along with his ears since he had a full day of training. Ningguang thanked those who served her mea while flipping through some important documents. Albedo noticed Daiyu shyly looking over at him as she approached him with his meal. He gave her a soft smile in return, making her blush harder at the cute expression.

This, however, caught the eye of the eldest prince.

”Hey! Why are you making goo-goo eyes at my little maid?” Itto hissed, glaring at his brother. “Since when did you two get close?”

”Ever since I dealt with a little problem of hers. If she is your servant, then why haven’t you noticed that she was getting bullied?” Albedo replied smoothly, not wanting to enrage the oni prince. “Speaking of which…father there is something we must discuss at the moment.”

The servants in the room started muttering among themselves, Daiyu slinking into the background when most of their stares went on her. What did the prince mean by that? Is this the reason why she hadn’t seen Mingxia in weeks?

Albedo stood up, pulling out a stack of papers from under his coat, and threw them in front of Zhongli. “This is a list of maids that were caught shirking their chores, wasting time on frivolous matters, and stealing resources from the rooms of the princess and acting queen. I’ve made it my duty to watch them dutifully and write down those repeated offenders. Now, as if this list, I did manage to punish the head maid for her acts of bullying and abuse of power. She purposely took out all her anger upon one maid in particular who has been worked to the bone since she got here and given her the chores that other maids should be doing.”

Zhongli paused in his drinking as he picked up the papers. There was a hush in the room as they watched his expression turn from neutral to angered in a matter of seconds. Daiyu felt the room starting to shake from his rising anger. This earthquake caused the chandelier to sway, several bits of plaster to fall, and platters to clang to the ground. The other servants fell to their knees and tried to hold onto something. Daiyu too fell forward, only to be caught by Albedo before Itto could swoop in. The smug prince stared at his rival who only growled in response. Once the earthquake passed, Zhongli slammed his hands against the table, cracks appearing on the wood.

“Allow me to ask this simple question my son; who is this maid that has been taking on all the chores in the east corridor?”

His voice was deadly calm, but everyone knew better not to speak lest they become paste from a falling boulder. Albedo, however, took this opportunity to allow Daiyu to stand up and gestured her to speak. It took all the willpower and patience she could muster as she stared at the Emperor.
