Wilbur POV
Wilbur headed towards the kitchen, hoping Kristin would be there. He needed to apologize for his brother's mistakes. She deserved that.
As the room came into view, the brunette was relieved to find her there. She was leaning on the counter, watching the oven like a hawk waiting to devour its meal. Wilbur entered the room, clearing his throat to announce his presence.
The woman turned to him with the same warm smile. But there was something in her eyes, the beginning of tears. "Hey Wilbur, how's Tommy?"
He sighed, "He's fine, Techno's keeping him company." He shifted from foot to foot, trying to write out the right script in his head. Wilbur took a deep breath, "I'm sorry about my brother. You were only trying to help. And we.... we really do appreciate it, even if he's too stubborn to admit it."
Kristin looked at him thoughtfully. "I'm glad I could help." Her eyes lingered back to the timer. "I was actually going to make cookies as a peace offering."
Wilbur's face lit up at her words. He couldn't remember the last time he tasted the sweetness of cookies. "Really?"
She laughed, "That's the only way I know how to make peace."
"Maybe we should argue more often..."
Again, she laughed, her eyes much brighter than before. She was such a kind hearted woman and the thought of leaving her one day left a lump in his throat. They didn't really have to leave, right?
Her voice took him out of his thoughts. "Are you going to take Phil's offer?"
Wilbur looked at her. Since the offer had come up, he had hardly thought about it. Mostly because there was no time to think about it. The thought of holding a guitar again made his heart swell. "If the offer is still on the table..."
"Of course, you can go grab it now if you would like." She lead him away from the kitchen, still keeping an eye on the clock. They approached a small door that was tucked away in the back of the house. Inside stood a trail of stairs leading to the world above. "You can come up here whenever you like."
"Thank you." He grinned. He made his way up the stairs, only looking back to see Kristin's encouraging smile. The attic was filled with dust, indicating the age that stained nearly everything. He barely had to look around before he found it.
A grand guitar, sat up against one of the pillars to the roof. It was old, with worn off paint. But Wilbur didn't mind. Gingerly picking it up, he set it on his lap. His fingers drifted across the wood, finding his way around the instrument. He plucked a string, instantly relaxing. No amount of words could make someone understand how much he missed this.
He played around with the guitar, allowing the notes of songs and chords to ring out. He spent hours up in that world, the smile never leaving his face.
And that's when he discovered its name.
"Simone."
