I let out a scream in frustration and slam my fist on my desk. (I rip out the piece of paper out of my notebook, and nearly rip it to shreds, when I remind myself then I would have to completely restart on my homework.) I push my chemistry book onto the the floor and sigh. I understand just fine that college is difficult, but I have been working on this one problem for hours.
I smack my lips together and place my head in my hands. I sit there for most likely 10 minutes, with tears threatening to spill over. I am about to give up entirely, and go to the kitchen to chow down on ice cream or something, when Annie walks in the room, talking on the phone and laughing. I push my hair out of my face, and pretend to still be working on the equation. But Annie knows me to well, and quickly wishes a hushed "Got to go." To whoever she was on the phone with.
"Kat, what's wrong?" She asks me, taking a seat on her own bed. "Just homework, that's all."
"Haha, welcome to college." She say sarcastically, grinning. I try to let out a small smile, but her smile just disappears. "Hey, put you're chin up. It's gonna be alright. Maybe I can help you. Let me take a look."
I hand here the Chemistry book with the assignment. She takes one look at it, then sighs. She hands me back the book. "Well I can see why you're depressed." A pondering look comes over her face, and she puts her chin in her hand, thinking what to do to help me over this stump. A light bulb goes off in her mind, and her face lights up. She sits up quickly.
"I've got it! Peeta Mellark is in that class, right? You could just ask him to come over and help you.""I don't know. It is Friday, he's probably working at his Cafe." I begin to protest. Annie pushes me playfully. "Excuses, excuses." She rises then leaves to exit the room. "Call him!!" She yells sat me on the way out, patting the door.
I bite my lip hard. I slowly pull out my phone, and flip through the contacts, finding his name. I remember typing it in after he gave me it for our last date. I pull his information up, then sit there rocking back and forth, contemplating calling him. If I don't, I will be forced to suffer continually through this awful work. But if I do, I will have to face the embarrassment of him saying no.
I tug at my hair, throw my arms up in the air, and end up hitting dial.
My breath quickens and I shove the phone up to my face. It rings once, twice, three, four times. I've decided to hang up, and gratitude myself in at least trying, telling myself it isn't my fault he didn't answer, when the other line picks up. I nearly jump out of my seat.
It's silent for a few minutes, then there is a static, shuffling sound, and finally someone clears their voice and pronounces "Hello?"
"Hi Peeta. This is Katniss. Umm I was wondering if you weren't busy at this moment if you want to come over and help me with homework?" I say way to quickly. There is silence on the other end, and I'm not sure he heard me.
"Are you inviting me over Katniss?" His voice perks up.
"Maybe. Would you like to come over? Are you busy?" I ask. I can hear him moving around in the background a lot.
"Oh no no! It's fine. I'll be there in like 10 minutes okay?"
"Okay. Okay." I reply, then sign off. 10 minutes. What can I do in 10 minutes. Clean up might be a start. I stand up and start running around, stuffing clothes and blankets into the nearest closet or laundry room. I run through every room, trying to pick up messes, whether they are mine or not. I pass the kitchen, and debate whether or not I should make a quick dinner for us. I am a horrible cooker, but I would rather have something than make Peeta starve.
I get out a pot with water, set it on the stove to boil, and pop some noodles on. Spaghetti is easy enough. Then I continue rushing throughout our apartment. I pass Annie and tell her that Peeta is coming over. A big smile appears on her face, and she winks at me as I continue on my way.
