Chapter 1: The Start of a New Adventure

Katniss Everdeen receives the chance of a lifetime. She has been accepted into one of the top colleges of the entire country! But when the owner's dashing son comes into her life, will all the stars line up, or will they come crashing down? All characters belong to Suzanne Collins!

I push the door open to my silent home and walk in. It's late at night, almost 10:00 and I assume everyone is asleep. I flip on the light to the entryway illuminating the dark hallway. I kick my shoes into the coat closet and take off my work hat with the annoying "Denny's" logo plastered across the cap. Sighing I make my way towards the living room, trying to be as silent as possible. I don't want to wake anyone. My dad works busy hours in the coal industry, as a businessman ordering the amount of coal that needs to be shipped somewhere in the country. Then my mom works tiring hours at the hospital as a nurse.

I make my way into the kitchen, and swing open the refrigerator door, hoping to find some leftovers to snack on. The fridge is pretty much empty, so I decide to grab an apple instead. Tossing it up in the air I turn around and close the door tight.

Abruptly the whole Kitchen and living room is light up with lights. I jump back, startled, and a gasp escapes my mouth. There stands my mom, dad, and little sister Prim. Prim holds a huge vanilla cake in her hands, with big words CONGRATULATIONS plastered in colorful frosting. They're each grinning ear to ear, and they start laughing at the face I must be pulling right now. My eyebrow is cocked up in confusion. "You look like you've seen a ghost!" Prim blurts out, and my dad elbows her in the side.

"What's going on?" I ask, confusion slurred in my voice.

My mom pulls out a big envelope from behind her back and hands it to me. The letter is from Mellark University. My eyes grow as big as plates and I look up into my parents eyes with yearning. "You've been accepted!" They all shout at once.

A squeal escapes my lips and I jump up and down, running up to give them each a hug. "This is amazing!!!" I scream. "Its my dream come true. I'm going to Mellark University."

Mellark university is the best college in the entire country. Everyone wants to go there, but they only accept the best of best. Graduating a year early from high school, I have been trying my best to study and work hard to get into that school. And now I am. I break away from my family laughing and crying happy tears. "By the way, you leave in two weeks." Prim says like its the most casual thing in the world.

I drag my last suitcase down from my upstairs bedroom and plop it down next to the front door. My dad comes on panting from loading up the car and pretends to be bent over in exhaustion panting heavily. "Gosh, you'd think you were going to move away for 4 months or something." He says sarcastically. I playfully punch him in the shoulder. "Is that it?" My mom says, coming up from behind me grabbing my shoulder. "I think so." I reply.

"Alright everyone! Load up! Off to the airport." My sister races to the car and my parents follow casually behind. "I'll be right back." I call after them. I walk upstairs into my childhood bedroom and touch tree walls my dad painted when I was little. Its nearly empty now, except for a dresser and a bed with folded blankets on it. I let my face sneak a sad smile, then I sigh and walk out, closing the door firmly behind me.

The short drive to the airport seems even shorter. I try to take deep breaths, grabbing my legs to keep them from bouncing. The adrenalin is running on full blast throughout my veins, making me scared out of my pants.

After we get to the airport my dad unloads the back trunk and roll them over the where my mom, prim and I stand. We all take a deep breath, waiting for the first person to start saying goodbye. After a moment of silence my mom clears her throat and walks over to me. She engulfs me in a hug. "Oh Katniss." She says, tears filling her eyes. "I'm so proud of you. I love you very much." Then she breaks away. Next my dad comes. "Katniss, ever since you were little I knew you were destined for great things. Go get em."
