The flu was not how Layla thought she'd spend the week before flying out to see Sam in Hawaii. She laid against her mother's couch, hugging the bowl she had puked into recently. "Honey, Karen's coming over. Do you want to move to your old room?" "Mom, I just want to sleep." Her mother sighed, "Layla, I want you to be honest with me, are you pregnant?" She paused, glaring up at the sun through her mother's living room window. There was no way she could be pregnant. Her and Sam had been keeping everything under wraps, and low key. They hadn't been that careless, had they? She had flown out to see him in Minneapolis for the Fourth of July and they had used her hotel room while the other boys slept in the van. It was glaringly obvious to Josh that something was up, but he never brought anything up to either her or Sam.

"I've been seeing a guy, but we've been careful." "Apparently not careful enough. Go to the store and go get some tests. Test while Karen's here. You know how much she loves babies." "Mom, I'm probably not pregnant. It's the flu." She took her mom's card out of her hand. "Whatever Kelli, I'm not pregnant." Her mother shook her head, "Poor little Sam's gonna be heartbroken. He's been in love with you for years. Karen's going to have to let him down easy."

No, Sam was going to kill her. He was nineteen and on a world tour. They were only hooking up as friends with benefits and she had fucked up and gotten pregnant, possibly. Everything was a possibility until she tested positive. She found herself staring at the tests, all offering different things, but really in turn doing the same. She sighed, leaving, going to Planned Parenthood instead, at least they'd be able to give her a timeframe if she was. Sam had texted her, asking how she felt and as she sat in the waiting room, passing glances at a screaming newborn, she didn't have it in her to text him back. Her flight left in two days to meet him in Hawaii. Her bags were packed, she just needed to get over this bug so she wouldn't get him sick. They brought her into the room after letting her pee in a cup and doing blood work. It was dingy and plain, drab would be the word she would use. The doctor came in smiling, "Ms. Hardwick, I wanted to give my congratulations."

It was like Layla's whole world came to a halt. Her mom was right, though her mom was never wrong. "How many weeks?" "It looks like a couple days just shy of seven weeks. Now, your hormone levels are telling me there's a possibility of multiples." She was seven weeks pregnant with Sam's children. They had never talked about a future beyond just hooking up. He was busy living his life, being a rockstar, and she was just a waitress in their hometown. "You're far enough along, do you want to see them?" "I can see them?" She was almost afraid to see them without Sam. Like it made it real and he was missing out. "Unless you aren't ready." "Um, I think I want to talk to the father first. Is flying okay?" "Flying is fine. I'll give you some nausea meds to keep your morning sickness at bay. Flying to see him?" She nodded, out of it. She was almost seven weeks pregnant, and she had to go home and not only face her mother, but his as well. She left the doctor's, turning on her car and just sat there. Her Bluetooth rang out, startling her, of course it was Sam, she pressed the answer button. "Hello?" "You haven't answered my texts all day. My mom said you're sick and staying at your mom's. Are you okay? Are you gonna cancel on me?" "No, babe. I'd never cancel on you. I just actually got the okay from the doctor to fly and I'm going back to my apartment tonight." "I wish I could come home and take care of you." "I'm coming to you, goofy. Are you gonna wine and dine me on the beach?" "Wine, dine, and sixty-nine."

She spent the entire ride back to her mom's talking with him, getting updates on how tour was going, how excited fans were, all the things he was seeing. It made the pit in her stomach only grow. What if he didn't want the babies? She could be a single mother. She could go through life dodging questions if the babies didn't look like him. She knew Josh would play fun uncle regardless of if she told him the babies were his actual nieces or nephews. "I'm at my mom's to get my stuff, sweet thing. I'll text you." "Ugh. Fine. We're about to get busy anyways. I miss you." "Two more days, goofy. And we'll be together." "Two days is so long. I need you to do that thing I like." "Ya know, I thought you were horny, but it sounds like you're just touch starved." "Only for you." Her cackle rang out making his heart swell. "Gonna make me fall in love with you, Francis." That was the goal.
