My eyes snap open and I lie on my bed, wide awake in the darkness. The only light in my bedroom is the moonlight pouring in from the window. I turn over and pick up my phone off the nightstand, checking the time.
"3:00 A.M... Of course..," I mumble.
I've been waking up randomly the past few weeks. I'm not exactly sure why but it's causing me to lose sleep. I get up and walk out onto the balcony, taking in the fresh air. I look out towards the woods and the back of the property, just observing.
"What the hell was that.." I say to myself, thinking I saw something move at the tree line.
I shrug, figuring it could be some animal, then I turn and walk back inside. I sit on my bed, then pull out a book to read. I read about half of it before I get tired again, so I mark the page and lay down. I quickly fall back asleep, but my alarm wakes me up just an hour and a half later, at 6 a.m. I slowly sit up and rub my eyes, looking around, a little disoriented. When I can finally manage to keep my eyes open longer than 5 seconds, I get up and take a quick shower. When I get done, I wrap myself in a towel and walk out to my closet, then I pick out an outfit. I judge my outfit in the mirror, black ripped jeans, black undershirt, a plaid shirt, and black tennis shoes, and I shrug.
"Good enough," I say, feeling comfortable.
I grab my backpack, walk downstairs, and to the kitchen to get something to drink. My sister, Summer, walks in and takes the can of drink from my hand, making me get another.
"Bitch," I say.
"Jerk," She responds.
"Are you driving yourself or are you gonna ride with me today?" I ask her.
"I'll drive myself. I think I'm gonna go out to eat after school, and I don't want to impose on anything you have planned." She answers
"Okay, sounds good to me." I reply
I grab another drink, and my keys then I walk outside. I climb into my truck and drive to school, getting there pretty quickly. I park my truck, then I walk inside to the library. I sit down and start reading a book then someone grabs my shoulders causing me to jump slightly. They laugh and I instantly recognize it as my friend Lee.
"Well that was a lame reaction. I was hoping I'd get more from you," He says while giggling.
"Well, I guess I'm sorry for not screaming, Lee," I respond
He sighs softly and shakes her head, looking a little saddened by my lack of expression.
"Cute outfit," He says.
"Thanks." I reply.
Summer sits down and pulls a sweet tea out of her bag.
"Good morning Summer. How are you?" Lee asks.
"I'm fine. You?" She answers.
"I'm good," He responds.
"Tyler said he's gonna try to come up here as well, but he's running late so I don't know how long he's gonna be able to be here." Summer says.
"He's always running late," I reply.
I read a little more from my book, and a few minutes later Tyler runs up the stairs, and to our table.
"Sorry guys, traffic was horrible. Plus, there were two girls fighting in the parking lot," Tyler says.
"In the parking lot?" I ask.
"Yeah, it was.. Chloe and Reagan, I think" He responds.
"Wait, aren't they friends? Like close friends?" I ask.
"Yeah, as far as I know. I don't understand why they'd be throwing hands in the parking lot," Summer answers.
"Apparently they've been fighting over some guy, but I didn't think they'd ever go as far as throwing punches," Lee says.
"I mean, they've never let a guy get in between them before, so it doesn't make sense," I say.
There's a few minutes of silence, then Tyler proposes a question to the group.
"Would you guys like to go to the swimming hole after school? I can bring some beer, or a different alcohol if you guys would like."
"I would be fine with it, I'd just have to go home and change." I answer
"Same," Summer agrees
"Well since everyone else is going I guess I'll go for a few hours. Eliza, after we get done swimming though, can you come to my house and help me with my math homework?" Lee asks
"Sure, I'd be glad to" I reply.
The bell rings and we say our goodbyes before heading to class. I slug through the day, constantly daydreaming about whatever I saw by the tree line last night. It just wasn't sitting right with me, especially since I had absolutely no idea what it was. When the bell rings at 3:30 p.m , I walk outside and get into my truck. I quickly get out of the parking lot to avoid traffic, then I make my way home.
End of chapter 1
