A New Job

I wake up in the morning to a cool breeze. I look around and notice the balcony door open so I get up and walk over.

"What are you doing out here?" I ask.

"Smoking," Austin responds, resting his arms on the railing.

"I didn't know you smoked," I say.

"Well it's not like I can die," He replies with a laugh.

"True enough," I say before joining him.

I look over and see a vape in his hand and I smile to myself.

"Did you get tired of cigarettes?" I ask.

He chuckles before answering, "I did, after smoking them for over a century it gets boring. With these vapes I can get a different flavor anytime I want."

"Touche," I reply before holding my hand out.

He hands the vape to me and I take a few puffs before handing it back. I get a cold chill and hold my arms, trying to keep myself warm in the morning breeze. Austin looks over at me and smiles before lifting up one of his arms. I smile before moving between him and the railing and pressing my cold face against his shoulder. He sets his arm back down and kisses the side of my head before taking another puff from his vape. I turn my head and he places it between my lips before I inhale and turn back. I watch the cloud of smoke drift off as I exhale then Austin stands up and looks down at me.

"Are you ready to go inside?" He asks.

I nod my head yes I walk past him. He closes the doors behind us then I turn and look at him.

"I.. I'm sorry about last night, I didn't mean for you to see me that way, and-" I start before he cuts me off.

"And you don't have to apologize. You ended up showing restraint last night, even if you needed a little help getting there. There's plenty of people who have been vampires far longer than you have that couldn't do that," He says.

"Okay.." I almost whisper while looking away.

He walks over and softly places his finger under my chin before making me look him in the eyes then he kisses my forehead. Before one of us can say anything I hear my phone ring so I walk over to my nightstand and pick it up.

"It's the sheriff," I say before answering the phone, "Hello?"

"Good Morning, Eliza. I need you to come by the station, we have a problem on our hands and I think we're gonna need you, and your sister's help," The sheriff says.

"Yes ma'am. What is it?" I ask.

"It's not the normal case, I'm pretty sure. There's been two murders in the surrounding towns and I'm pretty sure the next stop is ours. I've gone and looked at all of the crime scenes and case files and it looks like it was done by a human, but with how brutal they are I fear it's something else, like a vampire or something," She explains.

"Okay, I'll check with Summer and see if she'd like to help, but if she doesn't I will be able to handle it on my own. I'll see you in a few," I reply before hanging up the phone.

I start changing my clothes and Austin turns around, respecting my privacy and also thinking over everything he just heard.

"She knows?" He asks.

"She doesn't know I'm a vampire, no, but she does know I'm a hunter. She knew my parents and when my sister and I came here, she recognized us. We had to explain to her that our parents died and we were looking for a place to stay. She let us stay here, and she provides for us as long as we help her when she needs it," I explain.

"What if you get hurt but come back with no wounds?" He asks.

"I'll drink vervain before I go to make sure I can't heal, and if I do get hurt I'll keep drinking it until they heal normally. She'll never find out," I say.

"I don't think this is a good idea, Eliza. You're putting you and your sister at risk. What if they somehow figure out that you're vampires? They'd probably kill you," He replies.

"I don't think she even knows how to kill a vampire. She always throws stuff like this on to me, even if it's just a human. If she has any doubt that it's a human, any whatsoever, she gives the case to me and Summer to handle," I say.

"What if it is one of us? Being on vervain is like being human again, so how will you be able to handle the vampire while on it?" He asks.

I sigh before responding, "I was human when I first started hunting, Austin. I killed plenty of vampires while I was human. Now I'm older, I know more, and I can still kill things while only having human strength. I promise you I will be safe, and if you're still worried then put your phone number in my contacts. I'll call you if anything goes wrong and I need help, but with vampire hearing I'm sure you'd be able to hear my screams from wherever you are if something goes awry."

Austin grabs my phone and saves his number in my phone then he places it on the bed. I walk up behind him and make him turn around before kissing him. After a moment he pulls away and looks down at me.

"Are you trying to look appealing to this serial killer?" He jokes.

"It's just a tank top and blue jean shorts," I reply with a laugh.

"And that drop leg holster. It looks good on you," He continues.

"Well thank you. Also, they aren't considered serial killers until they kill three people, not two, " I reply with a smile before walking to Summer's room.

I open the door and walk to her bed before waking her up.

"Hey, the sheriff needs us for a possible murdering vampire. You in?" I ask.

"I really, really don't want to drink vervain.. You can deal with it more than I can.. Can you take this by yourself?" She asks.

"I should be able to. I'll take the impala so I'll have all of dad's weapons to choose from," I say.

"Okay.. Be safe, if it is a vampire remember to go for the distance kill, and if it's a human, don't kill," She replies with a laugh.

I roll my eyes before getting up and going to the kitchen. I see Austin standing there with a glass of water.

"What're you doing?" I ask.

"I was gonna fix your vervain drink, but I don't know where you keep yours," He answers.

"In the pantry, top shelf, and to the right," I reply.

He nods and get's the jar of vervain out then he hands it to me. I open it and put a little bit of it in the tall glass of water before stirring it. I look at it for a moment before downing it like a shot of vodka. I ignore the burning sensation in my throat and grab the keys to my dad's car before going out and opening the garage door. Austin is following behind me and I hear him whistle as I uncover the impala.

"I didn't know what I was expecting when you told me about the car last night, but it was not this," He says.

"She's nice, isn't she?" I ask.

"You're damn right," He replies while looking at the interior through the window.

I open the door and get in before cranking the car up. I wave bye to Austin then drive out of the garage, and down the driveway. I head to the sheriff's office, unaware of what awaits me.
