I get to the sheriff's office and walk inside. The sheriff meets me at the door and we walk to her office together. We sit down and she hands me the two files.
"These are from the other cases. There were no bites on the neck discovered but the wrists of the victims were cut while they were alive, then their bodies were.. Dismembered.." She explains.
"Oh god, that's gruesome. What makes you think it's a vampire though? Vampires prefer fresh blood so there wouldn't be a reason for them to drain their victims," I ask.
"Maybe they were trying to make us think it was a deranged human or something, I don't know, but out of all the cases I've seen, I've never seen this type of brutality," She explains.
"I really don't think this is a vampire, Jody. It's rare for vampires to drink blood that isn't fresh. I've only seen one case, and heard of another, and they drank out of blood bags because they didn't want to hurt people. I'll still check it out if you want me to, just to be on the safe side," I reply.
"Thank you," She replies.
"Now, onto the plan. You think this killer is going to target our town next, which is all cool, whatever, but it's not like we know where he's going to be," I say.
"The bodies were found in the woods, and underground. We only have two places like that here, the cellar of the old Donovan estate, and an old.. Fallout shelter I guess. We don't really know what it is. We never explored it after we discovered it," She explains.
"So, an old cellar or some underground shelter that's never been investigated.." I repeat, "Great."
"We just never got around to it," She says.
"You find an old fallout shelter and you don't think to investigate it? It should be at the top of your list, Jody, there's no telling what's down there, or what has happened down there," I say.
"I know, I know, but none of my deputies had the balls to go down there. You know them with their small town superstitions," She replies.
"Well those small town superstitions have saved people, Jody," I say.
She shrugs and I sigh.
"Fine, whatever. I'll explore both places and explore them so I might be able to know where I'm going. Where's the shelter?" I ask.
"Well, we marked the entrance on a map," She says before searching through her desk, "Here it is. This is the entrance."
She pulls out a map from her desk and points to a little dot on it.
"Okay so it's not that far from the Donovan's cellar, but it's still a good walk into the woods," I mumble.
I stand up and put the map in my pocket.
"Be on the lookout, Eliza. He'll probably try to abduct hikers rather than come into town, and with you going out there by yourself you'll be the perfect target," She says.
"I'll be fine," I reply before walking out.
I drive to the beginning of the old Donovan estate then I get out and open the trunk. I load my gun with wooden bullets.
"Vampire or not, these will hurt anybody," I mumble to myself.
I also grab my machete and clip the sheath to the belt of my holster. I also put a good chunk of glow sticks in my pocket, figuring I could use them to keep track of where I go in the bunker. I walk to the cellar and turn on my flashlight before walking down the stairs.
"What the hell is this place?" I ask myself.
I walk further in and see what looks to be a jail cell, with numerous chains on the wall. I walk through the door and rub my fingers against deep scratches on the wall.
