Uriel
"You think he'll be awake?"

I heard the whispered words, causing my heart to palpitate, as my adrenaline kicked in.

"It doesn't matter. We've been ordered to inject him with the sedative if he's not out cold. And he's chained so it'll be a clean job," the second voice whispered back, a bit louder than the first.

My palms balled into fists, knowing they were here for me but I wouldn't let them take me. I will rather die trying than let Gonzalez make me a lab rat for his illegal experiments. But while still chained and weak from the countless times I've been on drugs, there was a zero chance of me escaping if I get injected as they've planned. All I had was to hope they'd buy my act of being unconscious and unchain me without injecting whatever drug they have into my system.

Keeping as still as possible, I shut my eyes, letting my head hang low with my mass of long hair covering my face. I was so still that it was a struggle to breathe but It was the price I had to pay if I was going to survive this night.

With each passing moment, the sounds of their approaching footsteps got louder until I sensed them very close to me and they finally came to a stop.

"He seems lifeless,"

"If he's been drugged continuously as we've been told, then he's as good as dead,"

"I say we take him quickly if that's the case. I mean he looks harmless and we don't want him dead for whatever plans they have for him,"

I felt a hand grab my hair and yank it to pull my face up.

"Be careful," an agitated voice spoke.

The next thing I heard was the rustling of chains and a hand holding onto mine tightly before one of my arms was released, immediately dropping to my side. It felt numb from weeks of hanging above my head. Same thing was done to my second arm and thereafter, I felt an arm thrown around my shoulder to keep me on my feet with my head still hanging low.

A few minutes later, both of my legs were released and it was time to make a move. I had no idea how many men were outside. Hence, waiting until I was outside to attack was not in the cards.

"The bastard is heavy as fuck," the one holding me mumbled through gritted teeth.

"Think we should call for help or we'll be able to handle it..."

"We don't have time. Let's pull him out,"

And just like that, they were preparing to move me outside the basement, attempting to throw my arms around their shoulders, as if that could work. Without second thoughts, I jabbed at the one on my right, poking his ribs roughly with my elbow.

"Motherfucker! He's awake," he yelled in pain, making the second man jump away from me as soon as I opened my eyes. "Quick, get the sedative,"

I shook my head, reaching for the man behind me and hoisting him up in the air with my fingers wrapped tightly around his neck. Lost to all sense of humanity, I hauled him across the room at the huge pillar and I felt a sense of satisfaction when I heard his skull crack against the concrete wall.

"Help!!!" his companion yelled into the talking device attached to his ear, with a syringe in his hand and his wide fearful eyes focused on me. He rushed towards me, attempting to stick the needle into my arm but I was quick to yank it out of his hold, stabbing it into his neck without mercy. And just like that, he instantly became weak in my arms, slipping into unconsciousness and I released him.

By this time, I was panting heavily and sweating profusely. Each breath I took was a labored one as I began to feel my head spinning and my environment began to blur in my vision. But I couldn't give up. I'd already started and I did not just kill two men just to give up.

Promise me you'll escape...

Adina's words echoed in my head, edging me on. Balling my palms into fists, I shook my head to clear the thoughts. I have to be alert. I remembered one of the men calling for help. With no knowledge of where the help would come from or if there were more men outside awaiting our arrival, I began to move towards the exit of the basement, creeping along the dark walls to stay out of eyesight but before I could make it to the entrance, I saw two uniformed men heading my way with guns aimed at me.

Again, my heartbeat skyrocketed. But I felt the moment my body began to give up on me, my muscles feeling weaker than ever and I had the strangest urge to fall to the ground but I struggled to remain on my feet, ducking behind a door just to let the men pass by.

Fighting two men in this state would be a death sentence. I lacked the physical power to take on two men, and with them armed with guns, I'll be lying down dead in a minute. Patiently, I waited until they were a good distance from my hiding spot before taking to my heels, sprinting out of the basement into the darkness of the night, with only the faint light of the moon serving as my only source of light.

The moment I was out of the basement, my eyes landed on the huge gate that was open. I had no idea what was waiting for me outside that gate but with the hurrying footsteps heading out of the basement, I knew my time was running out. One way or the other, I was going to get caught but I'd take the risk.

I ran through the gate and as predicted, a black van was outside, a short distance from the gate with two men waiting beside it. On seeing them, I headed for the opposite direction, towards the woods but as my adrenaline rush increased, knowing I was so close to freedom, I felt my head begin to spin, my eyesight becoming blurry.

Running was becoming a chore as it felt as though I was pushing against a mighty force and my legs could no longer carry me.

Almost safe.

I chanted in my head repeatedly but my mantra was cut short when a bullet pierced through the skin of my neck, causing my mouth to gape open from the shock of the unexpected pain.

Not now...

I had to survive. I reached for the injury in my neck now oozing blood and quickly pressed my palm against it as I dived into the forest, hoping the trees would keep me off their aims. From their discussion, I knew they didn't want me dead. But maybe I was wrong because the next thing I felt was another bullet piercing through my head, that had a silent scream lodging out of my throat.

I felt the pain that hit me, the moment I knew the fight was over. Just a few more steps from where I'd been shot at, I fell to the ground in a heavy thud, the spikes of the grasses covering the forest floor piercing through my skin as life began to seep out of me.

As if my lungs had given out on me, my breath was labored, my air supply slowly cutting off. At that moment, the only words that floated in my head were Adina's words from a few hours ago.

Promise me you'll escape and be safe.

I'd let her down. It was one thing to escape but another to stay alive while at it.

A chill ran down my spine when I heard the rumbling of thunder and the cold raindrops falling from the open sky landed on my wounded body, the water sipping into my bullet wounds and causing me to wince from the pain ricocheting through my entire body.

I'm sorry Adina.

With my last breath came the darkness that descended upon me, as I finally gave in to the pain, and heartache of disappointing my little fairy, allowing death to steal me away.
