Adina
Thoughts of Uriel clouded my mind as I walked across the grounds of the parish, along with mother Theresa, on our way from morning mass. All night, I'd barely slept knowing he was more at risk now that the general was ready to transport him. They could come for him at any time and with the drugs still heavy in his system, I hope he'd be able to escape to safety.
"Adina..." Mother Theresa's voice broke through my trance, her hand gripping mine.
"Y-yes, mother..."
"Did you hear me at all?" she questioned, narrowing her gaze at me in concern but I shook my head.
"I'm sorry, mother. I was lost to the thoughts of the new painting I want to try out," I lied fluently, while smiling softly.
"It's okay, my child. I was saying you'll be needed in the kitchen today because we're having some priests and church elders come over from other parishes for a meeting."
"Alright mother, I'll come by to help. But I need to get to my room first to keep my rosary,"
"That's fine,"
With that, I increased my steps, hurrying towards the direction of my room.
"Hurry up, Adina," mother Theresa called out to me, but I was already slipping into the building where my bedroom was located. Not to keep my rosary as I'd lied to the nun, but to get the sketch I did of Uriel.
I'd run away after he tempted me to touch him, but I needed to show him the sketch and if possible, ask him to keep it. I had no idea how much time he had left, but I wanted to give him something that'll remind him of the little moments we've spent together.
As quickly as I'd headed into my room, I was out, quickly scanning the perimeter before darting towards the basement with no one in sight. A smile lit up my face at the thoughts of seeing the one man that had successfully launched himself in my dreams, and now in my heart. My heart skipped as though accepting the truth that I cared about the prisoner. My walk came to a halt, my smile slipping off my face, when I heard the loud furious voice of the man I'd come to know as the General, Uriel's enemy.
"You fucking failed me, Aaron. I gave you clear instructions to keep him heavily drugged until I come for him."
"I-I did. I followed through with all of your instructions, General,"
"Shut up!" he barked at the priest, making me jump as though he was talking to me.
Slowly, I crept along the wall, trying my best to hide in the shadows until I saw the priest kneeling before the older man, who had a gun pointed to his head, while Aaron pleaded with shaky arms. I sucked in a breath, my heart thudding hard against my chest, a cold sweat breaking out of my skin. My eyes traveled across the room to where Uriel had been chained but he wasn't there anymore. A small smile curled my lips, knowing he must have escaped.
"He killed two of my men, Aaron. A heavily sedated man will not have the strength to fight two men or to even escape far into the words from men with guns that were hot on his heels. My men have searched the entire periment of this parish but could not find him."
"I... I'm so-sorry, General. I'll do my best to look for him, please give me a second chance,"
A humorless laugh erupted from the general's lips, as his fingers reached for the trigger.
"Oh, I'll give you a second chance, but you better make it worth it,"
The next thing I heard was the boom of a gun, and the loud screech of father Aaron, blood soaking through his white cassock from where the general had shot him in his shoulder. Just when I thought it was over, another scream of terror erupted from the priest's lips, after another loud boom of the gun, more blood staining his uniform from a second wound in his leg.
My mouth was wide open, eyes wide in terror, and my heart racing erratically. A fearful shiver racked my body at the sight of the priest laying on the floor, whimpering in pain from his wounds.
"You have two weeks, Aaron. Two fucking weeks to find that man, if my men can't reach him. And if he's dead, you'll pay with not just your life, but of that person dear to your heart. Meanwhile, I'll take something that belongs to you as compensation for your failure. When you find the prize, come get it,"
Without waiting to understand the meaning of his words, I turned on my heels, running out of the basement, but I ran into two uniformed men, making me stumble back and fall on my ass. Before I could rise to my feet, I heard the footsteps behind me and I instantly knew it was the general behind me.
"Take her,"
"N-no..." I screamed, rising to my feet but a strong arm grabbed me, throwing me over his shoulder. "Let me go," I yelled, hitting his back and screaming at the top of my voice, hoping help would come my way.
"Adina!" I heard Mother Theresa's voice even though I couldn't see her. "Let her go," she pleaded.
"Mother, please help me!"
My words were met with a resounding slap that I didn't feel the effect but I knew it was for the nun as I heard a soft cry next.
"Adina..."
The general chuckled from behind me, as we walked through the gates with no help coming my way but I didn't relent in my screams for help.
"Let's see if daddy dearest loves you enough to come for you,"
I was thrown into the back of a van, with darkness surrounding me. The last thoughts on my mind as the van began to move were,
How did it end up this way?
*****
What do you think is coming next?
And what does the general mean by daddy dearest?
