Before T20 WC 2021, Flashback ~

'Vi did you get ready, we need to meet at BCCI office. I will be ready in 5 mins, should I pick you up', Rohit asked on the call as they were leaving for WC squad meeting.

'No don't pick me up, I am getting ready. I will be reaching before you, you just come fast. I will be waiting', Virat said.

Today Virat was so scared about everything. He was going to face Rohit's wrath today.

Virat reached the office and sat in the lobby. He was so nervous about Rohit's reaction that he was tapping his leg in tension.

Rohit arrived and hugged him happily as they were meeting after 2-3 days.

Virat hugged him back tightly, which certainly felt strange to Rohit.

'Kya hua, tu thik hai?', Rohit asked breaking the hug.

He saw Virat was looking tensed. Even in cool AC temperature, he was sweating profusely.

Before Virat could say something, they were called in for the meeting. They sat on their place.

'Before we start the meeting, I would like to inform something. I hope everyone will support and agree with me in this', Virat said.

All the selectors looked at him before they could start the agenda of the meeting.

Virat could feel Rohit's clueless gaze on him as he had no idea what Virat was going to say.

'Yes go on Virat', Dada said encouraging him.

'It has been a privilege to captain the Indian Cricket Team in this T20 International format. I believe I did everything in my power to lead the squad to success. Yes, I have disappointed people and experienced failure on occasion, but as they say, that's just part of the game. After this World Cup, I'd prefer to step down as captain of the Indian T20 cricket squad. As a Captain, this will be my last.  I have faith that Rohit will continue to build upon it and push it to new heights. And, as a Captain, he can lead it to even greater success', Virat remarked.

He sat down taking a deep breath. His voice was shaking, it had taken good amount of strength to keep it steady.

Virat could feel Rohit's pointed and hurt gaze at him, but he just could not look at him to see disappointment and betrayal.

He felt a hand on his shaking leg, it was Rohit's. He knew he was upset right now, but that gesture made Virat feel that he was gonna be there with him always.

Everyone accepted the decision except Rohit who was looking at Dada to do something. But to his disappointment he had to respect Virat's decision so no one said anything,

The whole meeting Rohit did not spare a glance at Virat, just passed him water.

'Ro please listen to me, ruk ja pls. I am sorry Ro, please ek baar baat sun le', Virat said as Rohit walked out of meeting room.

They were going towards the lift. Virat held Rohit's arm to which he shrugged off.

'Why should I listen to you? Virat, I've had enough of the meeting. Thank you for officially informing me, by the way. I now understand my place in your life thanks to you'

Rohit said in formal yet sad tone and drove off from there. Virat also left knowing that his reaction was completely justified though the last part hurt him.
