Twenty minutes had gone by since I last saw Donna and I was getting worried that something might have happened to her. What if she got lost? What if she was hurt? What if she was in trouble? All these thoughts were driving me mad with worry.
Finally, I spotted Donna walking over with the brightest smile on her face. Behind her was a man, following with the same dumb smirk.
"Rachel, I found my mate!" She said as she came over to me and hugged me with joy.
"In the bathroom?" I asked in surprise. How could she have found her mate?
"No, on my way back I ran into him," Donna shook her head with a laugh before turning around and hugging the man's arm. "Rachel, this is Conner. Conner, this is my best friend in the whole world, Rachel."
"Nice to meet you, Rachel," Conner said with a small bow.
"Don't bow," I said in a hurry, hoping no one saw that.
"Why not?" Conner said with confusion.
"Rachel is an omega," Donna tried to explain before reaching out a hand to assure me. "She came with me tonight as my handmaid."
"Oh," Conner nods in understanding. "I am sorry for scaring you with the bow."
"It is alright," I smile and hold out my hand. "It is nice to meet Donna's mate. She has been looking forward to meeting you for a long time."
"I have been looking forward to meeting her too," Conner said, looking only at Donna. "I would love to talk to you more, but I have a job I must get back to. Donna, I will see you soon. Save me a dance."
"I will," Donna gushed.
"And nice to meet you, Rachel." He said to me before leaving.
"Isn't he the cutest?" Donna said as she hung onto my shoulder.
"I guess this means you will be leaving the pack," I said in sadness as I knew my only friend would now have to leave to go to her mate's pack.
"I am not leaving you," Donna grabbed my hand and looked into my eyes with determination. "I will ask Conner to bring you with us. I would never leave you to those people. I couldn't bear the thought of you alone."
"Thanks, but you and I both know that is a long shot," I pat her hand and move away, unable to help myself from feeling sad that my only friend was now leaving without me.
"Rachel, I swear," Donna said once again.
Before I could say anything else, Donna's parents came over and swept her away to talk to some higher-up betas. I stayed silent and out of the way as I watched around the room for any signs of danger.
Something wasn't right and my wolf was stirring inside of me, causing my anxiety to rise. I stayed in control though, making sure my wolf didn't come out and cause any trouble.
My wolf was named Raven and she is much like me but doesn't take any shit. She wants to fight against Luther and all the bad things he has done, but I can't let her. I can't let her out because the last time I did, my father punished me so badly that it has become a fear.
Fear that if I ever do, my father would come to find me and end my life for good.
So I take a sip of punch and watch Donna, careful to make sure she doesn't get into any trouble with her parents. And when she does, I come over and sweep her away with an excuse.
