"What?" Conner said, looking from Donna to Damian with wide eyes. "What did you say?"
Damian didn't repeat, instead, he just looked at me, studying me from head to toe like a curious puppy. I wanted to run so badly, but I couldn't. Something was holding me back.
"Rachel," Donna whispered in my ear, giving me an excuse to break eye contact and look away. "Are you alright? I can hear your heart beating fast."
"I... I am fine," I nod, not sure if I was trying to convince her or myself.
"Are you sure?" Donna said, looking me in the eye for any sign to tell her what was happening to me. "You look pale. How about we get you a chair?"
"No," I shake my head. "I think I should... I should go."
"What?" Donna asked in confusion but I was already gone.
I heard someone call after me but I didn't look back. Instead, I hiked up my dress and took off to the doors that I came from, hoping to get outside and find a way out of here as fast as I could.
"Wait for a second," Luther grabbed my arm when he saw me run past him. I didn't even notice it was him until I saw the angry look in his eyes. "Where are you going? Why are you in such a rush?"
"I... I just need to leave." I said, trying to undo his grip on my arm. "Please."
"No," he started to drag me over to the corner of the room before narrowing his eyes at me. "What did you fuck up now? What mess do I have to clean up?"
"Nothing, please just let me go," I pleaded, wanting to get out of here before the person I was running from caught up to me.
"So you are trying to run away now?" Luther scoffed before slapping me across the face. "Nice try, bitch."
I fell to the ground and cupped my cheek, tears pricking in my eyes. The next thing I heard was an overpowering roar that shook the room. Everyone in the room fell silent and things started to happen so fast.
I saw a black blur rush Luther to the ground and Conner and Donna came running over. Conner went to help while Donna pulled me into a hug and checked my face. "Are you alright?" She asked in concern.
"I... I want to leave," I cried, feeling the pain still on my cheek.
"Alright," she nods and stands up, helping me to the outdoor patio area. She makes me sit on a chair before ripping part of her dress and dipping it in cold water, dabbing at my cheek. "Does it hurt?"
I nod, not wanting to speak.
"What happened?" Donna asked.
"I tried to run," I wiped a tear from my eye. "Luther thought I had done something wrong and was trying to run away from the pack, so he slapped me. I didn't mean to anger him so much."
"That bastard," Donna said with anger. "But why did you run? What made you leave?"
"Mate," I heard a rich and deep voice say as the doors opened wide. Damian's green eyes were now black as his wolf was in total control. "Mate," he repeated before rushing over and cupping my face to inspect it.
I must have angered him when I flinched, because of the fast movement, because he growled. "I will not hurt you. I promise you, mate," his wolf said as he went to gently touch my face again.
"Damian!" Conner came outside and saw everything so he just stopped.
"Damian! Why did you just attack an alpha? What made you so pig-headed that you attacked someone during a ball?" An unfamiliar person came outside. He looked older than Damian and Conner but not the age of a father. It must have been Beta Greyson.
And Greyson just about stopped in his tracks when he noticed Damian kneeling on the ground, inspecting my cheek. "What is this?" Greyson asked in shock before turning to Conner for answers.
"She is mate," Damian's wolf turned back and growled.
"Damian, calm yourself," another voice, this one even more commanding, spoke. "Robin, give Damian back control." It was an order from the most powerful alpha in the world. The king.
"Your majesty," Donna bowed, but I was in such shock that I forgot.
"Stand down," Alpha Bruce said, raising a hand. "Tell me what is going on here."
I looked back at Damian, who was now looking at my cheek with his green eyes back. He glanced at me for only just a second before he turned to his father. "Alpha Luther laid a hand on my mate."
"This is her?" Damian's father looked at me.
"Yes," Damian nods before he stands up and steps in front of me, blocking my view of his father. "This is her. And Alpha Luther dared to hit her right in front of me. I mearly paid him back."
I looked to Donna for any sort of help, uncomfortable with being placed in this position. But Donna was just as lost as me, with no way out of this conversation but through it. I looked ahead just in time to see the four men huddle together.
Suddenly the door opened once more to reveal Donna's mother and father. "I apologize greatly, but our alpha says we must take our pack and go."
"No!" Conner and Damian said at the same time with a dark tone.
"We really should get going," Donna grabbed my arm and helped me to my feet, taking this moment to make our escape. Donna was never greatful to see her parents, but for the first time I could see her welcoming the excuse to leave.
"No," Damian said, using his alpha tone.
Instantly Donna went still and her eyes to the ground, and I felt bad for her. I grabbed her hand and squeezed it for some sort of encouragement, but knew I could do little to help at this moment.
"We have to take our daughter and omega back," Donna's father went on.
"It seems that one of them has found their mate tonight, so they have to stay as the custom goes," Bruce Wayne stepped forward and told Donna's parents to head on.
"We both found our mates," Donna spoke up just loud enough to cause all heads to turn. "I mean... Beta Conner and I are mates."
"Then that means..." Donna's mother said in horror as the realization came crashing down. "You can not mean to say that the Alpha Prince's mate is a lowly omega???"
"She is no longer an omega," Damian stepped towards the parents and stared them down with rage radiating off of him.
"But she is a nobody," Donna's father steps forward to defend his mate. "She can hardly be worthy of standing beside you on the throne." This was more directed towards Damian.
"She is my mate as the Moon Goddess herself demanded," Damian's voice becomes low and I can tell he is fighting for control with his wolf.
"They will stay here," Alpha Bruce said, ending all discussion.
"Then can we at least say goodbye?" Donna's mother turned to her daughter in a pleading way.
Donna stepped back, knowing just as well as I that they were going to do more than talk. She didn't want to speak with them and I wouldn't have wanted that either, but thankfully Bruce put an end to it.
"There is no time," he said in a demanding voice. "You may write or call but for now you have to leave. Tell your Alpha that someone will be in touch with him soon, but not to come back until he is given permission."
Donna's parents looked angry but hid it well because they didn't want to anger the Alpha King anymore. Donna sighed in relief as she watched them walk away, hopefully going back for good.
I turned to Donna to check if she was alright and she just nodded.
"Gentleman, we must get back to our guests, Beta Greyson, call for your mate and have her tend to the ladies and show them around," The king gave his orders. "Ladies, have a good evening," he said before he walked back into the ballroom.
"I will see you later," Conner said to Donna.
Damian stayed a second longer, lingering between the doorway. Then he came over and kissed my unhurt cheek before walking back inside. I turned back to Donna who was just as shocked as I was.
